Checking the intake air temperature sensor
  • ‒ Connect the V.A.G. 1551 fault reader .
  • ‒ Switch on the ignition (engine cold).
  • ‒ Select the function "Reading measured value block" (function 08) and Display Group 03.
 
→ Display readout:
Read measured value block 3    ⇒
    1    2    3    4
  • ‒ Check display in display zone 4.
  • Specified value: approx the same as the ambient temperature
  • If there is an open circuit in the wiring to the sensor, a substitute value of 19.5 °C will be displayed.

If display zone 4 shows an implausible value:

  • ‒ Switch the ignition off.
  • ‒ → Pull off the connector on the sensor => Fitting locations Overview, Page 24-5.
  • ‒ Connect the V.A.G 1598/22 test box to the wiring harness for the engine control unit
    .
  • ‒ → Check the wiring from the connector for the intake air temperature sensor...
  • ‒ ... and engine control unit for an open circuit and short circuit.

  • ‒ If necessary, rectify open circuit or short circuit.

If no fault is detected in the wiring:

  • ‒ Fit a new intake air temperature sensor (G42).
