Self-diagnosis for the Motronic system

Connecting the V.A.G 1551 fault reader and selecting the engine electronics control unit

Note:

The V.A.G 1552 vehicle system tester may be used instead of the V.A.G 1551 fault reader, however a printout is not possible.

Test conditions

● Battery voltage at least 11 V.
● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.
● Fuel pump relay OK.
● Fuses OK.

‒ → Unclip the cover for the diagnostic connection.
‒ Connect the V.A.G 1551 fault reader or V.A.G 1552 vehicle system tester with cable V.A.G 1551/3.

Note:

If the display remains blank:

=> Operating instructions for the fault reader

Depending on the function required:

‒ Switch on the ignition.

or
start the engine , Table "Selectable functions".

‒ Switch on printer with the Print key
(the indicator lamp in the key lights up).
‒ Press key 1 for "Rapid data transfer".

Enter address word XX

→ Press keys 0 and 1 for the address word "Engine electronics" and confirm entry by pressing the Q key.

→ If the display shows one of the messages reproduced here, perform the fault finding procedure according to the fault finding program for diagnostic wiring.
