Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ Spreader tool 3424
  • ◆ Engine/gearbox lifter V.A.G 1383 A
  • ◆ Shock absorber set T10001

Removing

  • ‒ Remove wheel.
  • ‒ Unscrew connecting link for anti-roll bar on either side of vehicle.
  • ‒ Pull out spring clip of holder and disengage brake hose.
  • ‒ Disengage speed sensor wire from suspension strut.

Right suspension strut

  • ‒ Remove noise insulation.
  • ‒ Unscrew right drive shaft from gearbox flange.
  • ‒ Use wire to tie drive shaft to body.

Both sides (continued):

  • ‒ → Separate wheel bearing housing/suspension strut bolted joint.

  • ‒ → Insert spreader tool 3424 in slot -arrow-.
  • ‒ Turn ratchet handle through 90° and detach from spreader tool 3424.
  • ‒ Detach wheel bearing housing downwards from shock absorber tube.
  • ‒ When doing so, press brake disc by hand in direction of suspension strut to prevent shock absorber tube catching in hole of wheel bearing housing.

  • ‒ → Use wire -arrow- to tie wheel bearing housing to subframe.

  • ‒ → Unscrew hexagon nut for securing shock absorber at top.
  •     1 -    Ratchet handle (commercially available)
  •     2 -    T 10001/8
  •     3 -    T 10001/11
  •     4 -    T 10001/5
  • ‒ Take out suspension strut.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

  • ‒ → Prior to insertion in suspension strut holder, coat suspension strut bush -arrows- with assembly lubricant G 294 421 A1.

  • ‒ Insert suspension strut in suspension strut holder.
  • ‒ → Tighten hexagon nut for securing shock absorber at top.
  •     1 -    Ratchet handle (commercially available)
  •     2 -    T 10001/8
  •     3 -    T 10001/11
  •     4 -    T 10001/5

  • ‒ → Place suspension strut in position at wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Remove wire at wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Use engine/gearbox lifter V.A.G 1383 A to carefully raise wheel bearing housing until suspension strut/wheel bearing housing bolt can be inserted.

Note:

Do not press on ball end with engine/gearbox lifter.

  • ‒ When doing so, press brake disc by hand in direction of suspension strut to prevent shock absorber tube catching in hole of wheel bearing housing.
    • ‒ Shock absorber must be fitted as far as possible into wheel bearing housing
  • ‒ Take spreader tool 3424 out of wheel bearing housing.

  • ‒ → Fit new wheel bearing housing/suspension strut bolted joint.
    • ‒ Threaded end of bolt -1- faces in direction of travel -arrow-

Right suspension strut

  • ‒ Screw on right drive shaft at gearbox flange .
