Removing and installing ignition lock housing

Removing

  • ‒ Remove steering wheel .
Attention:
  • ◆ Wheels must be in straight ahead position when removing steering wheel.
  • ◆ Steering wheel must be in centre position.
  • ‒ Remove driver's storage compartment.

  • ‒ → Screw out bolts -1- and detach handle for steering column adjustment -5-.
  • ‒ Screw out bolts -2...4-.
  • ‒ Detach upper and lower steering column trim sections.

Vehicles without ESP:

  • ‒ → Unplug connector -1-.
  • ‒ Slacken off bolt -2- of clamp until steering column switch can be detached.
  • ‒ Unplug connectors for steering column switch.

Note:

Coil connector with slip ring is not to be detached from steering column switch. Make sure that coil connector with slip ring is not turned out of centre position (secure in installation position using adhesive tape).

Vehicles with ESP:

  • ‒ → Unplug connectors at steering angle sender -G85 and coil connector with slip ring.
  • ‒ Slacken off bolt -3- of clamp until steering column switch can be detached.
  • ‒ Unplug connectors -2- for steering column switch.

Note:

Coil connector with slip ring is not to be detached from steering column switch. Make sure that coil connector with slip ring is not turned out of centre position (secure in installation position using adhesive tape).

  • ‒ → Pull off surround -1- in direction of arrow.

  • ‒ → Screw out bolts -arrows-.
  • ‒ Detach surround at bottom.
  • ‒ Unplug connectors at ignition/starter switch -1- and reader coil -2-.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:

  • ‒ Set selector lever to "P".
  • ‒ → Turn ignition key to "Ignition ON" position -arrow-.
  • ‒ Then lift interlock lever -1- slightly and pull locking cable -2- out of ignition lock housing.
  • ‒ Remove ignition/starter switch.

  • ‒ → Screw out bolts -1-.
  • ‒ Pull out dash panel insert slightly.
  • ‒ Unfasten cable ties on back and release locking tabs of multi-pin connectors.
  • ‒ Unplug multi-pin connectors at dash panel insert.

  • ‒ → Drill out or if necessary chisel out shear bolts -arrows- and take out ignition lock housing.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:

  • ‒ Insert ignition lock housing and secure with new shear bolts.
  • ‒ Tighten shear bolts until head shears off.
  • ‒ Attach connector for ignition/starter switch and reader coil.

Vehicles with automatic gearbox:

  • ‒ Set selector lever to "P".
  • ‒ → Turn ignition key to "Ignition ON" position -arrow-.
  • ‒ Slide locking cable -2- into ignition lock housing; interlock lever -1- must be heard to engage.
  • ‒ Check ignition key removal lock.

  •     1 -    Steering wheel
  •     2 -    Steering column switch with coil connector and slip ring
  •     3 -    Clamping bolt
  •     a -    = 3 mm

  •     1 -    Steering wheel
  •     2 -    Housing with coil connector and slip ring
  •     3 -    Steering angle sender -G85
  •     4 -    Steering column switch
  •     5 -    Clamping bolt
  •     a -    = 3 mm

All models:

  • ‒ Attach steering column switch to steering lock housing.
  • ‒ Start by fitting steering wheel with old bolt.
  • ‒ Horizontally align steering column switch and set dimension a = 3 mm. Then tighten clamping bolt.
  • ‒ Detach steering wheel again.
  • ‒ Fit lower and upper surround.
  • ‒ Fit lower and upper steering column switch trim.
  • ‒ Install driver's storage compartment.
