Removing and installing selector mechanism

Removing –  Remove gear knob together with boot → Chapter. –  Remove ashtray or storage compartment in front centre console → Rep. Gr.68. –  Lift out noise insulation sections above selector mechanism. –  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  Remove engine cover panel -arrows-.

–  Disconnect hoses -1-, -3- and -4-. –  Release spring clips -2- and -5-, and remove air intake hose.

–  Remove air cleaner housing completely → Rep. Gr.24.

Caution When disconnecting the battery there is a risk of serious damage to electronic components: Observe the correct procedure for disconnecting the battery. –  Remove battery → Rep. Gr.27. –  Remove battery tray -arrows- (detach front of battery tray from air duct if applicable).

Metal relay lever: –  Detach securing clips -1- and -2- on both cables. –  Detach cable end-pieces from gearbox selector lever and relay lever.

Plastic relay lever: l  To prevent damage to gate selector cable, cable end-piece must be detached from gate selector cable before removing relay lever. –  Pull locking mechanism forwards in direction of -arrow 1- onto stop and then turn to left in direction of -arrow 2- to lock. –  Then press relay lever forwards (in direction of -arrow 3-). l  Detach cable end-piece only when relay lever is removed → Fig..

Continued for all vehicles: –  Detach cable support bracket from gearbox -arrows-.

–  Remove covers on vehicle underside -arrows- (left and right).

–  Detach electrical connector -1-. –  Detach plug connector from bracket -2- and move clear wiring to Lambda probe after catalytic converter -G130-.

–  Remove front cross member on vehicle underside -arrows-.   Note To prevent damage, the flexible couplings in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent further than 10°. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp -1-.

–  Unbolt support bracket for exhaust system -arrows-. –  Tie up front exhaust pipe on vehicle underside.

–  Remove rear cross member on vehicle underside -nuts 1 and 2-.   Note A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system. –  Detach exhaust system at rubber mountings -arrows-. –  Detach rear silencer at rubber mountings and remove rear section of exhaust system.

–  Loosen clips -arrows- and remove heat shield together with selector mechanism.

Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Install selector mechanism and tighten nuts -arrows-. Tightening torque → Item

–  Route cables -1- from selector mechanism -2- to gearbox as follows: l  The cables must run parallel and must not be crossed. l  The cables must be routed in the slot provided in heat shield -3-.   Note The enlargement shows the heat shield from above.

The cables and heat shield are held in the correct positions by clip -A-.

–  Apply a small quantity of grease -G 000 450 02- to pins -arrow- of gearbox selector lever -1-. –  Push gear selector cable onto pin and secure with securing clip -3-. Metal relay lever -2-: –  Apply a small quantity of grease -G 000 450 02- to pin of relay lever -2-. –  Push gate selector cable onto pin and secure with securing clip -4-. Plastic relay lever -2-: –  Insert gate selector cable in cable end-piece.

Continued for all vehicles: –  Attach cable support bracket to gearbox -arrows-. Tightening torque → Item or → Item. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. –  Install noise insulation above selector mechanism. –  Install ashtray in front section of centre console → Rep. Gr.68. –  Install gear knob together with boot → Chapter. –  Install exhaust system and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. Gr.26. –  Secure both tunnel cross-pieces on vehicle underside → Rep. Gr.26. –  Install battery tray and battery → Rep. Gr.27. –  Install air cleaner housing → Rep. Gr.24.
