Renewing flange shaft oil seal (left-side) Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Thrust piece -3305-

t  Extractor tool -T20143/2- t  Drip tray t  Sealing grease -G 052 128 A1- Removing l  Gearbox in vehicle

–  Remove front left wheel. –  Remove noise insulation (centre) by releasing fasteners -1 ... 3-.

–  Remove noise insulation (left-side) -fasteners 1 ... 3-. –  Unbolt drive shaft from gearbox flange.

–  If fitted, remove vehicle level sender (front left) -G78--arrows-.   WARNING The wheel bearing must not be under load (vehicle must not be standing on its wheels) when slackening the flange bolt securing the drive shaft.

–  Have a second mechanic apply the footbrake. –  Remove flange bolt -2- from left drive shaft. –  Remove drive shaft (left-side) → Rep. Gr.40.

–  Place drip tray under gearbox. –  Remove left flange shaft securing bolt; to do so, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever. –  Pull out flange shaft.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using extractor tool -T20143/2-.

Installing –  Lightly oil outer circumference of new seal. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip -arrow- half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.

–  Drive in new oil seal as far as stop using thrust piece -3305- (keep oil seal straight while installing). –  Push flange shaft in towards gearbox and tighten securing bolt. Tightening torque → Item The remaining installation steps are carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following points: –  Install drive shaft (left-side) → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40. –  Fill up oil in gearbox and check oil level → Chapter.

–  If fitted, install vehicle level sender (front left) -G78--arrows- and adjust headlights using function “Basic setting” → Booklet404.
