Renewing Left-Side Flange Shaft Oil Seal on A3 Mk2 Gearbox

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Multi-purpose tool -VW 771-
t  Puller hook -VW 771/37-
t  Thrust piece -T10160-
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

Removing
   
–  Remove left wheel.
–  Remove noise insulation (centre) by releasing fasteners -1 ... 3-.

–  Remove noise insulation (left-side) -fasteners 1 ... 3-.
–  Turn steering to the left.
–  Unbolt drive shaft from gearbox flange.
–  Tie-up drive shaft as high as possible. Do not damage paint on drive shaft.

–  Place drip tray below gearbox.
–  Remove flange shaft securing bolt. To do this, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever.
–  Pull out flange shaft and spring.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using multi-purpose tool -VW 771- and puller hook -VW 771/37-.

Installing
–  Lightly oil outer circumference of new oil seal.
–  Drive in new seal onto stop (take care to keep seal straight).
–  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Install flange shaft.
–  Secure flange shaft with countersunk bolt. Tightening torque → Item
–  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Check gearbox oil level. If necessary, top up to bottom lip of filler hole → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation.
–  Install wheel and tighten wheel bolts → Rep. Gr.44.
