Removing and installing oil pan Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- Removing   Caution Risk of damage to the gearbox. Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle with the oil pan removed or when there is no gear oil in the gearbox.   Note t  Please refer to → Chapter „Repair instructions“. t  Please refer to → Chapter „Rules for cleanliness when working on the gearbox“.

–  Remove air cleaner housing → Injection and ignition system; Rep. gr.24.

–  Release hose clip -2- securing air pipe (left-side).   Note -Items 1 and 3- can be disregarded.

–  Remove noise insulation -1- → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.

–  Remove nut -1- and bolt -2- and push coolant pipe on gearbox slightly to one side.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-. –  Release hose clip -2- and detach air pipe. –  Drain off gear oil → Chapter.

–  Detach wiring from bracket -A- at front of gearbox. –  Then unscrew nuts -arrow- from oil pan securing bolts and detach bracket -A-.   Note -Items B- and -C- can be disregarded.   Caution Mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743- can be irreparably damaged by electrostatic discharge. Do not touch contact pins in connector for mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743- with bare hands. –  Touch an earthed metal object, such as a heater radiator or lifting platform with your hand (without gloves) to discharge static electricity.

–  Turn fastener anti-clockwise -arrow- and unplug and detach electrical connector on gearbox.

–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Remove securing clip -3-. –  Loosen bolts -1- securing oil pan -2- in diagonal sequence and remove. –  Detach oil pan -2- (if necessary, knock oil pan loose by striking lightly with a rubber-headed hammer).   Note t  Allow remaining gear oil in oil pan to drain off into used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-. t  Always renew bolts -1-, oil pan -2- and securing clip -3-.

Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Exploded view - oil pan, mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743-“   Note t  Renew oil pan and bolts for oil pan. t  Renew O-ring -arrow- on connector for mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743-. t  The O-ring is supplied with the replacement unit if the mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743- is being renewed. –  Clean sealing surface on gearbox housing; it must be free from oil and grease. –  Lightly lubricate O-ring on connector for mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743- with gear oil.

–  Fit new oil pan -2- and tighten new bolts -1- in diagonal sequence and in several stages.   Note Make sure no electrical wiring is trapped when fitting oil pan. –  Install new securing clip -3-. l  Angled side of securing clip faces gearbox. –  Plug in connector for mechatronic unit on gearbox and lock connector.

–  Then install bracket -A- on gearbox -arrow-. –  Attach pipes/wiring to bracket -A- at front of gearbox. –  Install air pipe (left-side) → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.21. –  Install coolant pipe on gearbox → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19. –  Fill up with gear oil → Chapter and check gear oil level → Chapter.
