Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Hose clip pliers -VAS 6340-
Removing
–  Shift selector lever into position “P”.
–  Switch off ignition.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder 2.0 ltr. TFSI engine:
There are two different versions of this engine.
Version 1 (with air cleaner housing at side):
–  Unplug electrical connector -1- from air mass meter -G70-.
–  Remove air hose -2-.
–  Remove bolt -4- and remove air cleaner housing.
  Note
-Item 3- can be disregarded.

Version 2 (with air cleaner housing in engine cover panel):
–  Unplug electrical connector -3- from air mass meter -G70-.
–  Release clamps -1 and 2- and disconnect air hose from air mass meter.
–  Release spring-type clips -4- and detach air intake hose from engine cover panel.

  Caution
Risk of breaking engine cover panel.
It is important to observe the removal sequence.
–  Carefully detach engine cover panel from positions -1, 2, 3, 4- one after the other.

Vehicles with 6-cylinder 3.2 ltr. engine:
–  Detach vacuum hose -2- at air intake hose.
–  Detach air intake hose -1- at throttle valve module -J338-.
–  Unplug electrical connector -3- from air mass meter -G70-.
–  Unbolt air cleaner (top section) -arrow-.
–  Remove filter element.

–  Unbolt air cleaner (bottom section) -arrows-.

Continued for all vehicles:
l  Selector lever is in position “P”
–  Detach retaining clip -C-.
–  Release securing clip -A- detach by pulling upwards.
–  Press selector lever cable off gearbox selector lever -arrow- and move clear to the top.
  Note
t  Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
t  Items -1, B and D- can be disregarded.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove front exhaust pipes with catalytic converter and front silencer → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.26.
–  Remove propshaft → Rear final drive 02D, 0AV, 0BR and 0BY; Rep. Gr.39.

–  Release clips -arrows- and remove heat shield.

–  Remove bolts -arrows- and detach cover.
–  Carefully push cover including protective sleeve forwards over selector lever cable. Take care not to damage the protective sleeve.

–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
  Caution
Electric components on printed circuit can be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
Do not touch printed circuit -B- with bare hands.
  Note
The printed circuit can only be renewed together with the shift unit!
–  Unclip retaining tabs on both sides and detach detent plate -A- from shift unit.

  A37-0683
This step can only be performed if the selector lever is in position “S”.
–  Pull down retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable on selector mechanism and remove.
–  Pull plastic retaining spring -2- forwards slightly and press pin -3- upwards only as far as necessary -arrow-.
  Note
Ensure that pin is not pressed out completely.
–  Pull selector lever cable -4- out of shift unit.
  Note
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:
l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Exploded view - selector mechanism (vehicles up to 11.2009)“
  Note
t  Renew retaining clip for selector lever cable.
t  Check protective sleeve for damage. The protective sleeve can only be renewed together with the selector lever cable.
t  Check that the protective sleeve is seated correctly and not twisted.

–  Insert selector lever cable with protective sleeve into cover. Take care not to damage the protective sleeve.
–  Insert end of selector lever cable -4- into joint on selector lever.
–  Press pin -3- downwards -arrow- and check that plastic retaining spring -2- has engaged in pin.
–  Insert retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable.
l  Installation position: angled end of clip faces towards shift unit.

  Caution
Electric components on printed circuit can be damaged by electrostatic discharge.
Do not touch printed circuit -B- with bare hands.
–  Clip in detent plate -A- and tighten bolts -arrows-.

–  Hand-tighten cover (with glued-on seal) to selector mechanism -arrows-, making sure that seal is seated correctly.
–  Insert protective sleeve on selector lever cable in cover.

–  Carefully press selector lever cable onto gearbox selector lever on gearbox in opposite direction of -arrow-.
–  Fit securing clip -A- and press downwards to secure.
–  Fit retaining clip -C-.
–  Move selector lever from “S” to “P”.
l  Selector mechanism and selector lever cable must move freely. If necessary renew selector lever cable or selector mechanism.
–  Shift selector lever into position “P”.

–  Tighten bolts -arrows- for cover (bottom).
–  Install heat shield and aerodynamic fairings (Cd panels) for underbody → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.66.
–  Install propshaft → Rear final drive 02D, 0AV, 0BR and 0BY; Rep. Gr.39.
–  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.26.
–  → Chapter „Checking and adjusting selector lever cable“.
–  → Chapter „Checking selector mechanism“.
