Removing and installing coolant pump Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208-

t  Hose clip pliers -V.A.G 1921- Removing   WARNING Hot steam/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully. –  Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank

–  Lift off engine cover panel -arrows-.

–  Remove noise insulation (centre) - fasteners -1 ... 3-. –  Place drip tray for workshop hoist -VAS 6208- beneath engine.

–  Turn drain plug -arrow- on radiator anti-clockwise, if necessary fit drain hose to connection.

–  Unplug electrical connector -1- from oil pressure sender. –  Also disconnect bottom coolant hose at coolant pipe -2-, and drain off remaining coolant.

–  Lift out activated charcoal filter from retainer -in direction of arrow- with pipes connected and lay aside.   Note Before removing, mark direction of rotation of poly V-belt with chalk or felt-tip pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.

–  To slacken poly V-belt, turn tensioner in -direction of arrow-.

–  Lock tensioner in position with locking pin -T10060A-. –  Take off poly V-belt. –  Remove locking pin -T10060A- from tensioner for poly V-belt. –  Remove toothed belt: engine codes AXW, BMB, BHD → Chapter, engine codes BLX, BLY, BLR, BVY, BVZ → Chapter.

–  Remove the centre toothed belt cover -arrows-.   Note t  The belt pulley and toothed belt cover (bottom) do not have to be removed. t  The toothed belt should be left in position on the crankshaft sprocket. t  Before removing coolant pump, cover toothed belt with a cloth to protect against coolant.

–  Unscrew coolant pump securing bolts -1- and remove coolant pump -2-. –  Remove O-ring -3-. Installing Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following: –  Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring.

–  Moisten new O-ring -3- with coolant. –  Fit coolant pump -2-. l  Installation position: Sealing plug in housing faces downwards. –  Tighten bolts -1- for coolant pump to 15 Nm. –  Install toothed belt: engine codes AXW, BMB, BHD → Chapter, engine codes BLX, BLY, BLR, BVY, BVZ → Chapter. –  Install poly V-belt → Chapter. –  Fill up with coolant → Chapter. Tightening torques
