Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Hose clip pliers -VAS 6362-

Removing
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
  WARNING
Risk of injury as the radiator fans may start up automatically.
Even when the ignition is switched off, the radiator fans can start up without warning due to accumulated heat in the engine compartment, etc.
–  Remove bolts -arrows-.
–  Move coolant hose -3- clear.
–  Loosen hose clip -2-.
–  Unplug electrical connector -1- at charge pressure sender -G31-/intake air temperature sender -G42- and detach air pipe (right-side).

–  Release hose clip -1- and detach coolant hose from connection.
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove connection.

–  Turn thermostat -2- approx. 15° clockwise -arrow- and take thermostat out of connection.
–  Detach O-ring -1-.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:
l  Tightening torque → Chapter „Coolant pump and thermostat - exploded view“
  Note
t  Fit new O-ring.
t  Hose connections and air pipes and hoses must be free of oil and grease before assembly.
t  Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Electronic parts catalogue.
–  Clean and smoothen sealing surface for O-ring.
–  Lubricate O-ring with coolant.

–  Fit thermostat -3- with O-ring -2- into guide at connection -1-.

–  Turn thermostat -1- anti-clockwise -arrow- as far as stop.
–  Install air pipe → Chapter.
–  Install air hoses with screw-type clips → Fig..
–  Fill up with coolant → Anchor.
