Removing and installing cylinder head cover > < Cylinder head

1 - 10 Nm
q   Apply locking fluid when installing; refer to → Electronic parts catalogue
2 - 15 Nm
3 - 100 Nm
q   Use counterhold tool -T10051- when loosening and tightening → Chapter „Removing and installing camshaft“
4 - Hub
q   With sender wheel for Hall sender -G40-
q   To remove, use puller -T10052- → Chapter „Removing and installing camshaft“
5 - Cylinder head
q   Removing: vehicles with large engine support → Chapter; vehicles with small engine support → Chapter
q   Installing → Chapter
  Caution
t  The ceramic glow plugs are very easily damaged and project slightly beyond the cylinder head gasket surface, so do NOT lay the cylinder head down on the gasket side while the glow plugs are still installed.
t  Handling ceramic glow plugs → Chapter.
q   Checking for distortion → Fig.
q   If renewed, change engine oil and coolant
6 - Cylinder head bolt
q   Renew
q   Note correct sequence when loosening → Anchor and → Anchor
q   Note correct sequence when tightening → Anchor
q   Ensure that washers → Item are fitted in cylinder head
7 - Gasket for cylinder head cover
q   Renew if damaged or leaking
q   Before fitting, apply sealant at sealing points → Fig.
q   Insert lugs into holes on cylinder head
8 - Cylinder head cover
q   With vacuum reservoir
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
9 - Filler cap
10 - Gasket
q   Renew if damaged or leaking
11 - Special bolt, 10 Nm
q   Renew if damaged or leaking
q   Note correct sequence for loosening and tightening → Chapter „Removing and installing cylinder head cover“
12 - Tandem pump
q   Removing and installing → Rep. gr.20
13 - 20 Nm
14 - 10 Nm
15 - Coolant flange
16 - O-ring
q   Renew
17 - 10 Nm
18 - Seals
q   Renew
19 - Cylinder head gasket
q   Renewing → Chapter „Removing cylinder head - vehicles with large engine support“, → Chapter „Removing cylinder head - vehicles with small engine support“ and → Chapter „Installing cylinder head“
q   Note marking → Fig.
q   If renewed, change engine oil and coolant
20 - Hall sender -G40-
q   For camshaft position

   
Checking cylinder head for distortion
–  Use straight edge and feeler gauge to measure for distortion at several points.
l  Maximum permissible distortion: 0.1 mm.
  Note
The cylinder heads of diesel engines must not be machined.

Identification of cylinder head gasket
1 - Part No.
2 - Production code (can be disregarded)
3 - Holes
  Note
Cylinder head gaskets of different thicknesses are fitted depending on the amount of piston projection → Chapter. When renewing just the cylinder head gasket, the new gasket should have the same identification as the old one.

Sealing points between bearing cap and cylinder head
–  Apply one drop of sealant (Ø approx. 5 mm) to each sealing point at front bearing cap/cylinder head -arrows-; for sealant refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.

–  Apply one drop of sealant (Ø approx. 5 mm) to each sealing point at rear bearing cap/cylinder head -arrows-; for sealant refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.
