t  Lifting tackle -3033-
  W00-0221
t  Workshop hoist -VAS 6100-
Procedure
l  Engine in vehicle.
  Note
t  All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be refitted in the same position when installing.
t  Heat insulation sleeves that have been removed are to be reinstalled in the original position.
t  If engine oil is contaminated, perform oil change → Booklet808.
–  Drain off coolant → Chapter.
–  Remove intake manifold → Rep. Gr.24.

–  Detach coolant hoses going to to heat exchanger at bulkhead -arrows-.

Rest-of-world vehicles:
–  Disconnect vacuum line -1- from activated charcoal filter and move line clear.
–  Detach coolant hoses -2- and -4-.
  Note
Disregard -item 3-.

USA vehicles:
–  Disconnect following hose connections:
1 - Coolant hose to expansion tank
2 - Vacuum hose to activated charcoal filter
3 - Vacuum hose to tank leak diagnostic pump
4 - Fuel supply pipe
5 - Coolant hose to expansion tank

All vehicles (continued):
–  Detach coolant hoses at the connections indicated -arrows-.
  Note
t  Disregard -item 1-.
t  Illustration shows vehicle with direct shift gearbox.
–  Remove hose bracket with coolant hoses and vacuum hoses.
–  Remove timing chain from camshafts → Chapter.
  Note
To avoid damage, the flexible joints in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 30°.

–  Unbolt front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifolds -arrows-.

–  Loosen and remove the cylinder head bolts in the sequence indicated.

–  Attach the lifting tackle -3033- as follows:
l  Pulley end: position -3-.
l  Timing chain end: Item -10-.
  Note
The positions marked 1 ... 12 on the lifting tackle -3033- face towards timing chain end.
–  Carefully lift off cylinder head.
–  Place a clean cloth in the cylinders to prevent dirt from getting between the cylinder wall and piston.
