The generation 1 steering box was introduced with the launch of the Audi A3 2004 ►. It was replaced by the generation 2 steering box in model year 2004. Vehicles equipped with a generation 1 steering box can be converted to generation 2.
In model year 2008 the generation 2 steering box was replaced by the generation 3 steering box. Vehicles fitted with a generation 2 steering box can be converted to generation 3. Please refer to → Electronic parts catalogue
When replacing a generation 2 steering box with a generation 3 steering box, the electrical wiring → Anchor must also be renewed.
When fitted, the type of steering box can be identified from the number of securing bolts.
   
–  Raise the vehicle.
The illustration shows a generation 2 steering box.
The generation 2 steering box is secured to the subframe with four bolts -8-.
The generation 3 steering box is secured to subframe with only three bolts -8-; in addition there is no clamp -9-.

The generation 3 steering box is secured to the subframe (right-side) with only -1- bolt -5-; there is also no clamp -1-, rubber bush -2- or bracket -3-.

The illustration shows the fasteners for a generation 2 steering box.
Repair and servicing procedures for the generation 3 steering box are the same as for generation 2.
