General safety regulations for working on the airbag system
General safety regulations for working on the airbag system
t  Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
t  Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
t  Never perform tests using a test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter.
t  Only check the airbag system when it is installed in the vehicle and use suitable vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systems (for example vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051 B-).
t  Always disconnect the battery when working on pyrotechnic components of the restraint system and/or on the airbag control unit -J234-.
t  Observe the measures to be taken when disconnecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27..
t  Detach battery earth strap/wire, cover negative terminal. There is no waiting time after disconnecting the battery.
t  The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
t  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
t  The airbag units should be installed immediately after removing them from their packaging.
t  If the work is interrupted, the airbag unit should again be placed in its packaging.
t  The airbag unit must not be left lying unattended.
t  Following removal, airbag units must be stored with cushioned side facing upwards.
t  Airbag components are not to be opened or repaired. Always use new components.
t  Airbag units which are dropped on a hard surface or are damaged must not be used.
t  Always wash hands after handling airbag units which have been triggered.
t  Storage and transport must be in accordance with the statutory regulations of the countries in question.
t  Renewing airbag units
Always keep to the following sequence when renewing airbag units:
1 - Remove old airbag unit and set it down with cushioned side facing upwards.
2 - Take new airbag unit out of transportation container and set it down with cushioned side facing upwards.
3 - Immediately place old airbag unit in packaging.
4 - Install new airbag unit in vehicle.
t  There is no specified interval for renewing airbag units.
t  Do not use grease, cleaning agents or similar on the airbag units.
t  Airbag units must not to be exposed to temperatures higher than 100 °C even for brief periods of time.
t  Always renew unit if fabric is contaminated by oil, grease, paint, solvent or similar.
