Safety requirements for handling pyrotechnic belt tensioners
Safety requirements for handling pyrotechnic belt tensioners
t  Testing, removing, installing and repair work may only be performed by qualified personnel.
t  Never use test lamp, voltmeter or ohmmeter for checking.
t  Only check belt tensioner units that are installed and use suitable vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systems (for example vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051 B-) .
t  Before handling the belt tensioner units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
t  Always disconnect voltage supply when working on belt tensioners.
t  Observe the measures to be taken when disconnecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27..
t  Detach battery earth strap/wire, cover negative terminal. There is no waiting time after disconnecting the battery.
t  The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
t  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
t  When connecting the belt tensioner unit, all mechanical components (including those of the three-point seat belt) must be secured properly.
t  Other than the person performing the work, there should be no-one in the vehicle.
t  Belt tensioner components must not be opened or repaired; always use new parts.
t  Belt tensioner units which have been dropped onto a hard surface or which show signs of damage must not be used.
t  Belt tensioner units which are mechanically damaged (dents, fractures) must always be renewed.
t  Belt tensioner units must be installed immediately following removal from their packaging.
t  If the work is interrupted, the belt tensioner unit should again be placed in its packaging.
t  Never point the open end of a belt tensioner at another person.
t  Always wash hands after handling belt tensioners which have been triggered.
t  Storage and transport must be in accordance with the statutory regulations of the countries in question.
t  The belt tensioner unit must not be left lying unattended.
t  Belt tensioner units must never be treated with grease, cleaning agents etc.
t  Belt tensioner units must never be exposed to temperatures in excess of 100°C, even for brief periods.
