Removing and installing front seat backrest
1 - Backrest
Removing
  WARNING
On vehicles with side airbags please observe relevant safety regulations → Chapter.
–  Remove seat → Chapter.
  Note
Check which of the two possible modular wire routing versions has been used (»Modular Light« or »Modular«) → Chapter.
–  Attach seat repair stand -VAS 6136- to engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095-.
–  Attach front seat to seat repair stand -VAS 6136-.
–  Remove backrest adjuster → Chapter.
–  Remove seat height adjuster → Chapter.
–  Remove side trim (sill side) → Chapter.
–  Remove side trim (tunnel side) → Chapter.
  WARNING
Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Unplug connectors -7- (3x).
  Note
The side airbag connector -7- has been discontinued from model year 2006 onwards.
–  Unfasten wires at mounting rails.
Vehicles with »Modular Light« wire routing
Vehicles with »Modular Light« wire routing are fitted with only one wiring harness leading right through from the side airbag to the connector point → Anchor.
–  Remove corrugated tube → Chapter.
Vehicles with »Modular« wire routing
»Modular« wire routing is only used on vehicles featuring the bladder system and has not been implemented for all country-specific versions → Anchor.
–  Remove corrugated tube → Chapter.
All vehicles (continued)
–  Remove bolts -2- (4x).
–  Tilt backrest -1- forwards onto seat.
–  Press padding to side and carefully pull wiring harness out of seat pan -8-.
–  Detach backrest -1-.
–  Set down backrest -1- with impact cushion facing upwards.
Installing
  WARNING
Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
–  Make sure connectors engage fully (audibly).
–  Renew bolts -2- (4x).
–  Re-cut threads in backrest frame before inserting bolts -2- (4x).
–  Continue installing backrest -1- in reverse order of removal. Observe the following:
–  Install front seat → Chapter.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
The battery must be connected with the ignition switched on. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag or belt tensioner) are inexpertly repaired, this may result in unwanted triggering after connecting the battery. There must not be anyone in the vehicle while you are connecting the battery.
–  Connect battery earth wire with ignition switched on → Rep. gr.27.
–  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following the installation, the event memory must be interrogated, erased and interrogated again → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information systemVAS 5051B.
