Removing and installing seat rail cover (front) - vehicles up to 10.02 > < Removing seat if seat longitudinal adjustment motor / control unit is defective - vehicles up to 04.03

Removing front seat if seat longitudinal adjustment motor / control unit is defective - vehicles from 04.03 onwards
  Note
t  If possible move seat upwards.
t  Before disconnecting the battery obtain radio code.
t  For greater clarity, the illustration shows the seat pan without padding or backrest.
  Caution
Check electrical/electronic components and wiring before loosening bolts -6-.
After slackening bolts -6-, lower seat pan frame -7- including seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- with cross member -9- must be renewed.
1 - Bolt
q   Tightening torque → Chapter
q   Always clean threaded holes for bolts (using a tap for example)
2 - Bolt
q   Tightening torque → Chapter
q   4x
3 - Bolt
q   Tightening torque → Chapter
q   For nut → Item
4 - Upper seat pan frame
t  Removing
  WARNING
Observe the safety regulations for working on airbags → Chapter.
–  Unscrew bolt -1-.
–  Remove nut -5- and bolt -3-.
–  Fold seat forwards. If necessary remove steering wheel.
t  Removing and installing steering wheel → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.48
  WARNING
Before handling the airbag units (e.g. unplugging the electrical connector) the mechanic must discharge static electricity by briefly touching the door striker plate, or similar.
  Note
To avoid unnecessary repair costs, check the electrical/electronic components and wiring before removing the seat any further.
–  Perform the following checks:
t  Check fuse → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  Check voltage at connector point and perform Fault Finding if necessary → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  Check voltage at control unit → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
t  Check voltage at seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Renew fuse if it is defective → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
–  Repair or renew wire if there is no voltage at connector point → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
–  If control unit is defective it must be renewed → Chapter.
–  If seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- is defective, renew lower seat pan frame -7- → Chapter.
Further removal (only if seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- defective):
–  Disconnect battery earth wire → Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove bolts -6- (4x).
  WARNING
Before removing seat disconnect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Unplug connector -8-.
–  Tilt front seat backwards.
–  Move seat until bolts -2- (4x) are visible.
–  Remove bolts -2- (4x).
–  Unplug connectors → Chapter.
–  Connect airbag adapter → Chapter.
–  Lift front seat out of vehicle with the assistance of a second mechanic.
–  Separate lower -7- and upper -4- seat pan frames → Chapter.
–  Renew lower seat pan frame -7- with seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- and cross member -9- → Chapter.
5 - Nut
q   Always clean threaded holes for bolts (using a tap for example)
6 - Bolt
q   4x
q   For attaching cross member to lower seat pan frame
7 - Lower seat pan frame
q   Renewing → Chapter
8 - Connector
9 - Seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- with cross member
q   After removing bolts → Item, renew lower seat pan frame with seat longitudinal adjustment motor -V288- and cross member → Chapter.

t  Installing
–  Install front seat → Chapter.
