Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-
Removing
–  Remove gear knob together with boot → Chapter.
Vehicles with large radio slot:
–  Remove operating and display unit for air conditioner → Rep. Gr.87.

Vehicles with small radio slot:
–  First lift trim panel -1- in direction of -arrow A-, then pull it out in direction of -arrow B-.
Continued for all vehicles:
–  Unscrew bolts -arrows C- and then pull ashtray -2- out of centre console.
–  Unplug electrical connector for ashtray light.
–  Remove foam wedges from centre console.
–  Lift out the noise insulation.

–  Unscrew noise insulation for selector housing -arrows-.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-.

–  On vehicles fitted with auxiliary heater, remove bolts -arrows- securing exhaust pipe of auxiliary/ additional heater to noise insulation.

–  Loosen bolts/quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and remove front noise insulation -A-.
–  If fitted, loosen quick-release fasteners -3- and remove rear noise insulation -B-.

Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine:
Remove tunnel cross piece (rear) -arrows-.

–  Disconnect exhaust system at clamps -arrows-.
–  Remove rear section of exhaust system → Rep. Gr.26.
  Note
t  The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.
t  A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine:
–  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp -2-.
  Note
The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise it can be damaged.
Continued for all vehicles:
–  Remove tunnel cross piece (front) -1--arrows-.
–  Remove heat shield for exhaust system -4- from below selector mechanism.

–  Remove universal gearbox support -V.A.G 1359/2- from engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- and place a wooden block -arrow- on the lifting column in its place.
  Note
You can also insert gearbox support -T10337- in engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–  Support the tunnel cross member (rear) with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-.
–  First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-.

–  Carefully lower tunnel cross member (rear) with the engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- until the distance between cross member (rear) and body reaches dimension “x”.
t  Dimension x = 60 mm

–  Unscrew heat shield -arrow- for drive shaft (right side) and, if fitted, also for drive shaft (left-side).

–  Unscrew connecting rod -2- for selector rod.
–  Detach push rod -1-; to do so, unscrew hexagon socket head bolt.

–  Remove nut -arrow- and detach gearbox selector lever from selector shaft.
–  Remove selector mechanism to rear.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:

Always renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts.

–  Place gearbox selector lever in position and secure in place -arrow-. Tightening torque → Item
  A34-10014
–  Attach push rod -1-. Tightening torque → Item
–  Secure connecting rod -2-. Tightening torque → Item
  N34-1208
–  Tighten selector housing -arrows-. Tightening torque → Item
–  Install tunnel cross member → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Install exhaust system and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. Gr.26.
–  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter.
–  Install operating and display unit for air conditioner → Rep. Gr.87.
