Removing and installing shift unit on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002700   Note The following procedure describes how to remove and install the selector mechanism without the selector lever cable, i.e. the selector lever cable remains in the vehicle. Removing –  Remove selector lever handle → Chapter.

–  Remove selector mechanism cover -1- → Chapter. –  Remove air conditioning control console → Air conditioning; Rep. Gr.87. –  Remove ashtray from centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.68. –  Unplug electrical connector from selector lever lock solenoid -N110-.

–  Unhook locking cable -arrows-. –  Shift selector lever to position “S”.

Vehicles with 4.2 ltr. MPI engine:   Note To prevent damage, the flexible couplings in the front exhaust pipes must not be bent further than 10°. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamps -arrows-. –  Disengage rear section of exhaust system at rubber mountings and remove.   Note A second mechanic is required for removing the rear section of the exhaust system.

Vehicles with 3.0 ltr. TDI engine:   Note The flexible pipe connections (de-coupling elements) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° - otherwise they can be damaged. –  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp -arrow-.

All models: –  Unbolt heat shield -A- for propshaft -arrows-.

–  Remove heat shield -1- for exhaust system below selector mechanism -arrows-. –  Unscrew bolts at gearbox/propshaft flange. –  Push propshaft -2- together towards rear final drive. The constant velocity joints can be moved axially.

–  Tie propshaft up to side onto heat shield -arrow-.

–  Unscrew cover on underside of selector mechanism -arrows-. –  Remove selector lever cable sleeve from selector mechanism cover (bottom) and slide back.

–  Remove retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable by pulling it off downwards at the shift unit. –  Pull plastic securing spring -2- slightly forwards and press pin -3- upwards, but only as far as is necessary -arrow-.   Note Ensure that pin is not pressed out completely. –  Pull selector lever cable -4- out of shift unit.   Note Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-.   Note t  The assistance of a second mechanic is required to detach the selector mechanism from below. t  If retaining clips -1- or -2- break off during removal, the selector mechanism must be renewed. Any parts which break off and drop into the selector mechanism will block the selector mechanism. –  Press retaining clips -1- and -2- inwards, while pushing selector mechanism downwards. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: l  Tightening torques → Chapter –  Install selector lever cable → Chapter „Exploded view - selector lever cable and locking cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699“.

–  Fit new retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable on selector mechanism. l  Installation position: The angled end of the retaining clip faces to the inside of the selector mechanism. –  Install locking cable → Chapter „Removing and installing locking cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699“. –  Adjust locking cable → Chapter „Adjusting locking cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699“. –  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter „Checking and adjusting selector lever cable on vehicles with vehicle ID No. up to 8E_8A 002699“. –  Bolt propshaft onto gearbox → Rear final drive 01R; Rep. Gr.39. –  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Rep. Gr.26.
