Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Special wrench, long reach -T10070-
Procedure
l  Engine in vehicle.
  Note
All cable ties which are released or cut open when removing must be fitted in the same position when installing.
–  Remove intake manifold → Chapter.

–  Remove cover -1- on left side of engine compartment.
  A10-1031
–  Disconnect coolant hoses -1 … 3- at expansion tank.
–  Unbolt coolant expansion tank -arrow-.
–  Unplug electrical connector for coolant shortage indicator switch -F66- at bottom of coolant expansion tank.

–  Unplug electrical connector at Hall sender 2 -G163--item 1- and at Hall sender 4 -G301--item 2-.
–  Disconnect earth wire at rear of cylinder head.

–  Remove toothed belt → Chapter.
–  Remove camshaft sprockets on cylinder head (left-side).
–  Remove bolts -1- and -2- and take off toothed belt cover (rear left).

–  Remove bolts -arrows- at front coolant pipe at cylinder head.

Vehicles with multitronic gearbox 01J or automatic gearbox 01V:
–  Disconnect vacuum line leading to brake servo -arrows-.
All vehicles:
–  If fitted, remove heat shield for electrical connections from bulkhead (left-side).

–  Unscrew bolts -1- on flange of combination valve for secondary air system.
–  Unscrew bolts -2- and -3- at rear coolant pipe on cylinder head.

t  The coolant pipe and combination valve do not have to be removed.

Rest-of-world vehicles:
–  Unscrew nut -2- (accessible from above) securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold (left-side).

To avoid any damage, the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.
–  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp (left-side) -left arrow-.

–  Remove nuts -1- and -3- (accessible from below) securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold (left-side).
  Note

–  Separate front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

USA models:
–  Unscrew nut -2- (accessible from above) securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold (left-side).
  Note

–  Unscrew bolts -1 … 4- and remove front cross-piece.
  Note
  A26-0568
To avoid any damage, the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°.
–  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp (left-side) -left arrow-.

–  Remove nuts -1- and -3- (accessible from below) securing front exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold (left-side).
  Note

–  Separate front exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.

–  Loosen cylinder head bolts in the sequence -1 ... 8-.
–  Carefully remove cylinder head.
