Checking fuel gauge sender -G- Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-

t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C- Procedure Saloon: –  Detach trim in luggage compartment. –  If necessary, fold forward right backrest of rear seat bench. Avant: –  Remove left-side section of backrest (1/3 section) → Rep. Gr.72. –  Remove left-side trim in luggage compartment and anti-soiling tray → Rep. Gr.70.

All models: –  Unscrew cover for flange -arrows-.

–  Unplug electrical connector -arrow- at flange.

Vehicles up to 06.2001 –  Connect hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- to measure resistance between contacts -2- and -3-.

Sender installed	Sender at lower stop	Sender at upper stop
Fuel gauge sender -G-	approx. 65 Ω	approx. 275 Ω

Note t  If the resistance is 0 Ω, there is a short circuit. If the resistance is ∞ Ω, there is an open circuit in the wiring. t  To test the maximum and minimum resistance values for “tank full” and “tank empty”, remove the fuel delivery unit → Chapter and move the sender float all the way to its top or bottom position. t  The following values are obtained with the fuel gauge sender -G- removed, due to the greater travel of the float arm:

Fuel gauge sender -G-	approx. 45 Ω	approx. 295 Ω

Vehicles from 06.2001 onwards –  Connect hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- to measure resistance between contacts -2- and -3-.

Fuel gauge sender -G-	300 … 310 Ω	53.5 … 59 Ω

Note t  If the resistance is 0 Ω, there is a short circuit. If the resistance is ∞ Ω, there is an open circuit in the wiring. t  To test the maximum and minimum resistance values for “tank full” and “tank empty”, remove the fuel delivery unit → Chapter and move the sender float all the way to its top or bottom position. t  The following values are obtained with the fuel gauge sender -G- removed, due to the greater travel of the float arm:
