Removing and installing power steering pump (vehicles with 4-cyl. engine)

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Hose clamps up to 25 mm Ø -3094-

t	Locking pin -3204-

t	Pin wrench -3212-, or if necessary use water pump wrench -V.A.G 1590-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

Front-end service sleeves -3369- Removing All vehicles –  Remove noise insulation → Rep. Gr.50. → Rep. Gr.50 All vehicles except TFSI –  Remove front bumper → Rep. Gr.63 –  Move lock carrier to Service position → Rep. Gr.50. → Rep. Gr.50 All vehicles –  Slacken off poly V-belt → Rep. Gr.13. –  Remove poly V-belt from power steering pump pulley.

–  Clamp off suction and return lines with hose clamps -3094-. –  Place drip tray in position. –  Disconnect suction line. –  Disconnect pressure hose (22 mm).

All vehicles except TFSI –  Depending on version, unbolt steering pump pulley, using pin wrench 3212 to counterhold.

Vehicles with TFSI engine –  Remove securing bolts -1- for power steering pump through holes in pulley.

All vehicles –  Unscrew bolt -arrow- on back of power steering pump. –  Take out power steering pump. Installing Installation is performed in reverse sequence; note the following: t  Renew gaskets and seals. t  Before fitting a new pump, put in hydraulic fluid at the inlet and turn pump by hand until fluid flows out at the pressure outlet. t  Secure all hose connections with new hose clips. → Parts catalogue –  Turn hub by hand until fluid comes out at pump outlet.

–  Fit pump on bracket. –  Install and tighten bolts -1-. → Rep. Gr.13

–  Tighten bolt -arrow- on back of power steering pump. → Rep. Gr.13 –  Fit new seals on banjo bolt. –  Tighten banjo bolt for pressure hose → Item. –  Install suction hose. Installation position → Chapter.

–  Bolt on power steering pump pulley. → Rep. Gr.13 –  Fit poly V-belt. → Rep. Gr.13 Ensure that the belt is properly seated in the pulleys when installing. –  Install lock carrier. → Rep. Gr.50 –  Install bumper. → Rep. Gr.63 –  Install noise insulation. → Rep. Gr.50 –  Fill up with hydraulic fluid → Parts catalogue. –  Start engine and check that belt runs properly. –  Check hydraulic fluid level → Chapter. –  Bleed steering system → Chapter. –  Check steering system for leaks → Chapter.
