| The navigation system RNS-JP3 consists of an operating unit with screen and the navigation computer in the centre console. A DVD and MD player is fitted behind the swivelling operating and display unit. |
| The RNS-JP3 determines the position of the vehicle on a map stored on a DVD by evaluating the vehicle speed signal and the data received via GPS and from a built-in gyro sensor. |
| The system uses this data to compute the direction travelled and the distance covered by the vehicle. These values are compared with the stored road network on the navigation DVD. |
| The position is continuously adapted while the vehicle is moving (dead reckoning). The accuracy of the position is enhanced by checking the plausibility of the signals. A correction is made in the navigation control unit if the calculated position is not on the stored road network. |
