Removing and installing brake pads

Removing

Note:

Mark brake pads to be reused on removal. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking!

When installing the brake discs, note the direction of rotation -arrow on the brake disc- and fitting location -left or right-

  • ‒ Raise vehicle.
  • ‒ Remove wheels.

A46-0152
  • ‒ → Secure brake disc with a wheel bolt, see -arrow-.
  • ‒ The arrow on the brake disc must point in the running direction.
  • ‒ L-stands for left

A46-0153
  • ‒ → Press retaining spring in direction of arrow (with ball of hand) and remove the spring from the brake caliper sideways.

A46-0154
  • ‒ Disconnect the brake wear indicator connector
  • ‒ Release the connector from the holder using a screwdriver, turning connector by 90° at the same time.
  • ‒ Pull connector out upwards and unhook the wire.

A46-0156
  • ‒ → Detach brake pipe from bracket

A46-0155
  • ‒ → Remove trim cap -1-.

A46-0157
  • ‒ → Unscrew both guide pins and remove from brake caliper.
  • ‒ Remove brake caliper housing and lay to one side so that the weight of the brake caliper does not stress or damage the brake hose.
  • ‒ Take brake pads out of brake caliper housing or from brake carrier.

Only use methylated spirits to clean the brake caliper housing.

Installing

  • ‒ → Press back piston.

Note:

Before inserting new brake pads, press piston back into the cylinder with resetting tool. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise brake fluid which was used to top up the brake fluid reservoir, may escape and cause damage.

Important
Brake fluid is poisonous and must on no account be siphoned by mouth through a hose.

A46-0158

  • ‒ → Insert brake pad with retaining spring and wear indicator into brake caliper housing (piston).

A46-0160
  • ‒ → Fit outer brake pad -1- to brake caliper.

A46-0157
  • ‒ Secure brake caliper housing to brake carrier with both guide pins to 25 Nm.
  • ‒ Ensure that the brake hose is installed without twisting.
  • ‒ Fit both protective caps.
  • ‒ Insert retaining spring into brake caliper housing.
  • ‒ Attach brake pipe
  • ‒ Plug in connector for wear indicator and engage pipe in dust cap and trim cap.
  • ‒ Fit wheels
    Tightening torque 140 Nm

Notes:

  • ◆ After inserting the retaining spring into the two holes, press it under the brake carrier. If incorrectly installed, it is not possible to adjust the wear of the outer pad, and the pedal travel will be increased as a result.

After replacing the brake pads, depress pedal firmly several times with the vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.

  • ‒ Check brake fluid level and top up if necessary.
