Notes:

  • ◆ The rear brakes are self-adjusting, so it is unnecessary to adjust the handbrake. Adjustment is only necessary if the handbrake cables, brake calipers, brake pads and brake discs are renewed.
  • ◆ The foot brake system must have been bled and must be functioning properly.
  • ‒ Depress brake pedal firmly at least 1*.
  • ‒ Handbrake lever in rest position.

  • ‒ Remove ashtray for rear compartment.

=> General Body Assembly; Repair group 68

  • ‒ Remove any plastic parts on compensating bar; they do not need to be reinstalled.
  • ‒ → Use a screwdriver to fix compensating bar in place to prevent it from turning (shown without centre console to simplify illustration).

Note:

On 4WD vehicles the handbrake cable adjusting elements are located in front of the rear lower transverse links.

On FWD vehicles they are in the tunnel on the underside of the vehicle.

  • ‒ → Remove locking element -D-.
  • ‒ Screw adjusting nut -C- in as far as the stop; counterhold with an open jaw spanner (13 mm AF) in the area -E-.
  • ‒ Press together coarse adjuster -B-.
  • ‒ Screw out adjusting nut until the slot for the locking element is visible.
  • ‒ Insert locking element.

  • ‒ → Pull both cable sleeve coarse adjusters apart at the same time until the cables are tensioned; the lever must not be raised at the brake caliper.
  • ‒ Remove screwdriver from compensating bar and apply handbrake firmly 3 times.

Note:

→ After completing the adjustment of the handbrake, the coloured O-ring -1- must not be visible to ensure that the adjustment mechanisms of the handbrake cable adjustment elements remain adequately protected against dirt and water.

  • ‒ Check pretension of handbrake and, if necessary, turn fine adjuster -A- in/out ...

 
N46-0144
  • ‒ → ... until the lever lifts slightly off the brake caliper.
  • ‒ Pay attention to dimension -A-: A small gap should be visible. This gap must not be wider than 1.5 mm.
