Special tools and workshop equipment required

Plug repair set, Part no. 1H0 698 311A

Removing

  • ‒ Fit bleeder hose and bleeder bottle to the front left brake caliper bleeder screw and open bleeder screw.
  • ‒ Depress the brake pedal in order to pump out as much brake fluid as possible.
  • ‒ Close front left bleeder screw.

Note:

 
N47-0083
  • ◆ Protect the engine compartment against escaping brake fluid.
  • ‒ → Detach the feed hose -1- for the clutch master cylinder and seal with a dummy plug.
  • ‒ Unplug the connector of the sender for the float warning indicator -2-.
 
N47-0085
  • ‒ → Disconnect brake pipes -1- from brake master cylinder and seal brake pipes with plugs from repair kit, Part No. 1H0 698 311 A.
  • ‒ Unscrew nuts -2- from brake master cylinder.
  • ‒ Carefully remove brake master cylinder from brake servo unit.

Pay special attention to the following on installation:

  • ‒ When fitting together the brake master cylinder and brake servo unit, ensure that the push rod is correctly located in the brake master cylinder.
  • ‒ Apply slight pressure to the brake pedal in order to move the push rod towards brake master cylinder; this makes it easier to guide brake master cylinder onto the push rod.

Note:

On RHD models the following additional operations also need to be carried out.

  • ‒ Pull off plenum chamber seal
  • ‒ Unclip wiring loom
  • ‒ When removing the brake master cylinder, pull the wiring loom up and take the brake master cylinder out of the brake servo unit.

Bleeding clutch hydraulic system:

  • ‒ Connect V.A.G 1869 but do not switch on yet.
  • ‒ Open bleeder screw on slave cylinder.
  • ‒ Attach collector bottle hose.
  • ‒ Switch on the bleeding appliance and allow about 100 cm3 of brake fluid to flow out of the clutch slave cylinder.
  • ‒ Close bleed screw.
  • ‒ Bleed brake system
