• ‒ Observe general repair instructions.

Note:

The exhaust system must only be removed when the left sealing ring is replaced.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary equipment required

• ◆ Fitting drift 2062
• ◆ Drip tray V.A.G 1306
• ◆ Universal mount V.A.G 1359/2
• ◆ Engine/gearbox lifter V.A.G 1383 A

Removing

• ‒ Remove rear section of exhaust system as from clamp(s):

=> 4-cylinder Engine (5-valve), Mechanical Components; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts

=> 4-cylinder Engine (5-valve turbo), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing parts of exhaust system

=> 4-cylinder Diesel Direct Injection Engine (TDI), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (2-valve), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (5-valve), Mechanical Components; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts

• ‒ Release drive shafts on left or right of final drive and put aside:

=> Running Gear, Front and Four-wheel Drive; Repair Group 42; Arrangement of Rear Axle Components (vehicles with 4WD); Removing and installing subframe

• ‒ → Remove flange shaft. To loosen the securing bolt, screw two bolts into the flange shaft and counter-hold with a lever.
• ‒ Place drip tray V.A.G 1306 underneath and drain gearbox oil.
• ‒ Pull out flange shaft using the bolts already screwed in.

• ‒ → Lever out flange shaft oil seals using a suitable lever.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

• ‒ Clean seat for oil seal.
• ‒ Coat outer circumference of seal with gear oil.

• ‒ Fill space between sealing and dust lips with multipurpose grease.
• ‒ → Drive in oil seal for right flange shaft onto stop with drift 2062; do not cant seal.

• ‒ → Drive in oil seal for right flange shaft onto stop with drift 2062; do not cant seal.
• ‒ Bolt on drive shaft

=> Running Gear, Front and Four-wheel Drive; Repair Group 42; Arrangement of Rear Axle Components (vehicles with 4WD); Removing and installing subframe

• ‒ Stress free alignment of exhaust system

=> 4-cylinder Engine (5-valve), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts, Stress-free alignment of exhaust system

=> 4-cylinder Engine (5-valve turbo), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts, Stress-free alignment of exhaust system

=> 4-cylinder Diesel Direct Injection Engine (TDI), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (2-valve), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (5-valve), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts, Stress-free alignment of exhaust system

• ‒ Top-up gear oil in rear final drive and check oil level => Page 39-93.

Tightening torque
