Removing

• ‒ Remove gear stick knob and cover.
• ‒ Remove centre console:

=> General body repairs; Repair Group 70; Dash panel; Removing and installing the front centre console

• ‒ Remove noise insulation.
• ‒ → Remove noise insulation for shift mechanism housing -arrows-.

• ‒ → Unscrew nuts securing shift mechanism housing -arrows-.

• ‒ Remove rear section of exhaust system (rearward of exhaust pipe clamp(s)) and remove front exhaust pipe together with catalytic converter if necessary.

=> 4-cylinder Diesel Direct Injection Engine (TDI), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (2-valve), Mechanics; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system

=> 6-cylinder Engine (5-valve), Mechanical Components; Repair Group 26; Removing and installing exhaust system parts

• ‒ Removing propshaft .

• ‒ → Detach selector rod -arrow A-.
• ‒ Unscrew hexagon socket head bolt on push rod -arrow B-.

Note:

Shown in illustration with manual gearbox.

• ‒ Swing housing for shifts mechanism down together with selector rod and push rod, and remove.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

• ‒ Push selector rod on so that the securing bolt fits in the recess in the selector shaft.

• ‒ → Then secure selector rod -arrow A-.
• ‒ Then bolt push rod to gearbox -arrow B-.
• ‒ Adjusting shift mechanism => Page 34-24.
• ‒ Bolt on propshaft => Page 39-83.
• ‒ Adjust propshaft => Page 39-88.
• ‒ Stress free alignment of exhaust system
