Removing

• ‒ Shift selector lever into "P" position.
• ‒ Obtain code on vehicles with coded radio/integrated radio and navigation system.
• ‒ With ignition switched off disconnect battery earth strap.
• ‒ Remove central console.

=> General body repairs, Interior; Repair group 68; Storage compartments, covers and trim parts

• ‒ Remove catalytic converter or front exhaust pipe and remove front heat shield.

=> Engine mechanics; Repair group 26

• ‒ → Release cover -1- snap lock by pressing in direction of arrow -A-.
• ‒ Take cover off mounting bracket -2-.

Separate selector lever cable -3- from mounting bracket as follows:

• ‒ Press ends of securing clip -4- together and remove.
• ‒ Pull selector lever cable off selector lever -5-.
• ‒ Pull locking plate -6- for selector lever cable on mounting bracket out downwards.
• ‒ Pull selector lever cable out from mounting bracket, when doing this do not kink cable.
• ‒ Remove selector lever handle =>Page37-9.
• ‒ Remove cover with guide => from Page 37-2, Items 3 - 5.
• ‒ Unclip locking cable from securing spring on mounting bracket, to do this lift securing spring lightly.
• ‒ Unclip connector for solenoid and selector lever illumination .
• ‒ Remove nuts -7- (Qty. 4).
• ‒ Take mounting bracket -2- out downwards.

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

• ‒ Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable, lightly grease cable eye and cable ends before installing.
• ‒ → When renewing mounting bracket, clip rubber housing -8- in before installing.
• ‒ Ensure there is a perfect seal between mounting bracket and body.
• ‒ Tighten nuts -7- (Qty. 4) to 10 Nm.
• ‒ Install locking cable and adjust => from Page 37-26.
• ‒ Guide cover into groove -9- and then engage the snap lock. The cover must be heard to click into place.

Note:

Ensure the cover seats and seals perfectly.

• ‒ Installing exhaust system free of stress

=> Engine Mechanics; Repair group 26

• ‒ Shift selector lever into position "3".
• ‒ Install cover => from Page 37-2.

• ‒ Install selector lever handle.
• ‒ Check selector lever cable adjustment, adjust if necessary
  => Page 37-21.
• ‒ Check ignition key withdrawal lock => Page 37-29.
• ‒ Install centre console.

=> General body repairs, Interior; Repair group 68; Trays, compartments and trim

Notes:

• ◆ When the battery is reconnected, re-activate electrical equipment (radio, combined radio/navigation system, clock, electric windows) as described in the Owner's Manual.
• ◆ Further procedures after reconnecting the voltage supply:
