Checking combination valve for secondary air system for proper operation and leakage > < Checking activation of secondary air pump relay

Vehicles with auxiliary heater:
–  Remove bolts -arrows- securing exhaust pipe for auxiliary/additional heater to noise insulation.

All models:
–  Remove noise insulation -arrows-.
  A10-0018
–  Unplug electrical connector -1- at secondary air pump motor -V101-.
  Note!
Shown in illustration with bumper removed.

–  Connect voltage tester -V.A.G 1527 B- between contacts -1- and -2-.
l  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051- is connected; vehicle self-diagnosis and vehicle system “01 - Engine electronics” is selected. When doing this the ignition must be switched on.

Display on -VAS 5051-:
–  Under selection menu -1- select the diagnostic function “03 - Final control diagnosis”.
–  Press the button until the secondary air pump relay -J299- is activated.
l  The LED should flash.
–  Exit function “03 - Final control diagnosis” by pressing the key.
–  Switch off ignition.

If the LED does not flash:
–  Perform the following checks marked with a dot.
l  Check for open circuit in wiring from connector on secondary air pump motor -V101- to secondary air pump relay -J299--item 2- (on 3-position relay carrier in electronics box in plenum chamber, position 2).
l  Check for open circuit in wiring from contact 1 of connector to earth (refer to current flow diagram).
–  Eliminate open circuit in wiring (refer to current flow diagram).
If no fault is found:
–  Renew the secondary air pump → Chapter.
