The new features of “engine generation III” as opposed to “engine generation II” are as follows:
t  Chain-driven oil pump beneath crankshaft drive.
t  Modified front sealing flange.
t  Modified oil routing in cylinder head; originally with oil supply pipes on camshaft bearing caps, subsequently replaced by integrated oil passages in camshaft bearing caps
t  Modified sump (top section) with liquid gasket.
Distinguishing feature
An external distinguishing feature of the “engine generations II” and “III” is the shape of the cylinder head cover:
A - “Engine generation II” (to approx. 04.1997)
B - “Engine generation III” (from approx. 04.1997)
