Secure engine to engine and gearbox support -VAS 6095- prior to performing assembly work → Chapter.
1 - Dowel sleeve
q   Insert in cylinder block
2 - Drive chain sprocket
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
3 - Crankshaft
q   Measuring axial clearance → Chapter
q   Measuring radial clearance → Chapter
q   Do not rotate the crankshaft when checking the radial clearance
q   Crankshaft dimensions → Chapter
4 - Bearing cap bolts
q   Renew
q   Tightening sequence → Fig.
5 - Bearing caps
q   Note marking → Fig.
q   Installing → Fig.
6 - Thrust washer
q   Only fitted on 4th crankshaft bearing
q   Oil grooves face outwards
q   Note location
q   Measuring axial clearance of crankshaft → Chapter
7 - Bearing shell for bearing cap
q   Without oil groove
q   Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark positions)
q   New bearing shells for bearing caps are only available with colour coding “yellow”
8 - Not fitted
9 - Thrust washer
q   Only fitted on 4th crankshaft bearing
q   Oil grooves face outwards
q   Measuring axial clearance of crankshaft → Chapter
10 - Bearing shell for cylinder block
q   With oil groove
q   Do not interchange used bearing shells (mark positions)

11 - Bearing cap bolts
q   Tightening sequence → Fig.

   
Markings on crankshaft bearing caps
t  Bearing -1- is on pulley end.
t  Bearing -4- is on flywheel end

Installing crankshaft bearing caps
Crankshaft bearing cap “1” is located at toothed belt end, crankshaft bearing cap “4” on flywheel end.
–  Renew bolts -1 … 16-.
–  Insert dowel sleeves in cylinder block.
–  Tighten bearing cap bolts in following sequence:
1.  Screw in bolts -A- finger-tight.
2.  Tighten bolts -1 ... 16- to 30 Nm with torque wrench.
3.  Tighten bolts -1 ... 16- to 60 Nm with torque wrench.
4.  Turn bolts -1 ... 16- 90° further (1/4 turn) using a rigid wrench.
5.  Tighten bolts -A- to 25 Nm with torque wrench.
