Checking fuel pump (electrical test) - vehicles with 6-cylinder turbo engine

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Remote control V.A.G 1348/3A with adapter cable V.A.G 1348/3-2
  • ◆ Hand multimeter V.A.G 1526 or V.A.G 1526 A
  • ◆ Adapter set V.A.G 1594 A

Requirements for test:

  • ● Battery voltage not less than 12 V
  • ● Fuse No. 28 OK

V97-6548
  • ● → Relay 6 in central electrics unit OK
  • ● Fuel filter OK
  • ● Ignition switched off

Test sequence

  • ‒ Open fuse box cover on the left side of the dashboard panel.

A20-0098
  • ‒ Pull fuse No. 28 off fuse carrier (left row, 5th large fuse from the top).
  • ‒ → Connect remote control V.A.G 1348/3A with adapter cable V.A.G 1348/3-2 to right-hand terminal of fuse socket No. 28 -arrow-.
  • ‒ Connect clamp to vehicle battery (+).
  • ‒ Press remote control switch.
    • ‒ Pump should start running audibly.

Note:

A20-0190

The fuel pump runs very quietly. Where possible, avoid noisy surroundings for this test.

If pump does not start running:

  • ‒ Detach trim in luggage compartment.
  • ‒ Unbolt cover for flange on fuel tank under floor trim in luggage compartment.
  • ‒ → Release and unplug 4-pin connector -1-.

V96-0816
  • ‒ → Set hand-held multimeter V.A.G 1526 to voltage measuring range (20 V direct current) and connect to contact 1 (green/yellow) and contact 4 (brown) of connector using test leads from V.A.G 1594 A.
  • ‒ Press and hold remote control switch, and read off voltage.
    • ‒ Specification: approx. battery voltage

If the specification is obtained, even though the fuel pump did not run, remove flange as follows:

A20-0190
Warning!
Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening the system place a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.
  • ‒ → Mark the supply pipe -2- and return pipe -3-, then pull pipes off flange.

V20-1026
  • ‒ → Remove union nut with spanner 3217.
  • ‒ Remove flange and seal out of opening in fuel tank.

V20-1068
  • ‒ → Check that the electrical wires between flange and fuel pump are connected and test for continuity.

If no wiring fault is detected:

  • ‒ Fuel pump is defective. Renew fuel delivery unit .
  • ‒ Install flange .
