Note:

When the engine control unit is disconnected, the learned values are erased but the contents of the fault memory remain intact.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• ◆ VAS 5051 with VAS 5051/1

• or

• ◆ V.A.G 1551 with V.A.G 1551/3 A

Removing

• ‒ Connect the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 or fault reader V.A.G 1551 and select the engine electronics control unit with "address word" 01 .
  For this purpose, the ignition must be switched on.

• ‒ Always start by displaying and printing out the control unit identification => Page 01-12.

• ‒ Compare code to encoding versions => Page 01-89.
• ‒ Switch ignition off.

• ‒ → Detach rubber seal of plenum chamber cover in direction of arrow.
• ‒ Remove plenum chamber cover -1- from the front.

• ‒ → Remove cover for electronics box (plenum chamber) -arrows-.

• ‒ → Carefully lever off the retainer bar -arrow- with a screwdriver.
• ‒ Release the connector latches and pull of the control unit connectors.
• ‒ Take out engine control unit.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following:

Note:

In the first learning phase, during the basic setting operation for the engine, slightly irregular idling and slight jolting during driving are possible.

Important note:

After installing the new engine control unit, the following operations must be performed:

• ‒ Interrogate fault memory and erase, if necessary => Page 01-14.
• ‒ Adapt immobiliser to engine control unit

=> Electrical System; Repair group 01; Immobiliser self-diagnosis; Adaption after renewal of engine control unit

• ‒ Perform adaption of throttle valve control part -J338 => Page 24-149.
• ‒ Note instructions for encoding new engine control unit => Page 01-89.
• ‒ In vehicles with cruise control (recognisable from steering column switch), this should be freed in engine control unit:

=> Electrical System; Repair group 01; Cruise control system self-diagnosis; Checking cruise control system

• ‒ Perform learning of kickdown function on vehicles with automatic gearbox .
