Testing throttle valve control part
Performing adaption of throttle valve control part

In order for the idling speed stabilisation to function, the engine control unit needs to know the stop positions of the throttle valve positioner (V60) and the potentiometer characteristics of the throttle valve positioner sender (G127) and throttle valve potentiometer (G69).

The learning process (adaption process) must be carried out if:

  • ◆ the voltage supply to the engine control unit has been interrupted (e.g. when the battery is disconnected)
  • ◆ a new throttle valve control part has been fitted
  • ◆ a new engine control unit has been fitted
  • ◆ fault code 17967 is recorded in the fault memory

The learning process (adaption process) is carried out:

  • ◆ automatically if the ignition is switched on once for at least 6 seconds without operating the starter or the accelerator
  • ◆ by selecting Display Group 098 in the "Basic setting" mode with the engine not running

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 (or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552) with cable V.A.G 1551/3
  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551
    .
  • ‒ Switch on ignition.
  • ‒ Select "Basic setting", Display Group 098, engine not running
    .

→ Indicated on display:
Basic setting 98    ⇒
    4.420 V    3.880 V    Idling    ADP.runs

When the Q key is pressed the throttle valve positioner moves to Min., Max. and several intermediate positions, and the control unit records the various throttle valve angles in its permanent (non-volatile) memory. This process takes no more than 10 seconds. The throttle valve then remains in the start position for about 20 seconds before returning to the rest position (no current).

→ Indicated on display:
Basic setting 98    ⇒
    4.420 V    3.880 V    Idling    ADP.O.K.
  • The adaption process has been successfully completed.

Note:

→ If one of these messages appears on the display, this means that the adaption process has been aborted.
Basic setting 98    ⇒
    4.420 V    3.880 V    Idling        ADP.ERROR

The following faults are possible:
Function is unknown or
cannot be carried out at the moment
  • ◆ Engine started while adaption was in progress
  • ◆ Battery voltage less than 10 V
  • ◆ Throttle cable incorrectly adjusted
  • ◆ Fault in wiring between throttle valve control part and engine control unit
  • ◆ Throttle valve control part defective
