Final control diagnosis

Notes:

  • ◆ The final control diagnosis can only be performed with the ignition switched on and the engine not running.
  • ◆ The electric fuel pump runs continuously throughout the final control diagnosis.
  • ◆ During the final control diagnosis the individual control elements are activated in turn for about 50 seconds each (secondary air pump relay -J299 for about 10 seconds), unless the test programme is deliberately advanced to the next control element by pressing the ⇒ key.
  • ◆ The control elements can be tested either by listening or by touching.
  • ◆ The final control diagnosis is terminated if the engine is started or if an engine speed pulse is detected.
  • ◆ If the final control diagnosis is to be repeated without first running the engine briefly, switch the ignition off for about 2 seconds and then back on again.

The final control diagnosis activates the following components in the stated sequence:

Secondary air inlet valve -N112

Secondary air pump relay -J299

Requirements for test:

  • ● Fuses for engine electronics OK.
  • ● Fuel pump relay OK.

Test sequence

  • ‒ Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 (or fault reader V.A.G 1551) and select engine electronics control unit by entering address word "01" ( .)
    When doing this the ignition must be switched on.
 
→ Indicated on display:

  • ‒ Enter "03" to select the function "Final control diagnosis".

Activating fuel pump relay

  • ‒ Confirm input with Q key.

Fuel pump relay -J17

The fuel pump relay will continue to be activated (i.e. will click) for about 50 seconds unless the ⇒ key is pressed to deliberately advance the programme to the next control element.

If the relay is not activated (does not click):

  • ‒ Test activation of fuel pump relay -J17.

Activating ACF solenoid valve 1 -N80

  • ‒ Confirm input with Q key.
 
→ Indicated on display:

ACF solenoid 1 -N80

The solenoid valve will continue to be activated (i.e. will click) for about 50 seconds unless the ⇒ key is pressed to deliberately advance the programme to the next control element.

If the valve is not activated (does not click):

  • ‒ Test solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter -N80
    .

Activating solenoid valve for exhaust gas recirculation -N18

(only for engines with code ALZ)

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.

Exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18

The solenoid valve will continue to be activated (i.e. will click) for about 50 seconds unless the ⇒ key is pressed to deliberately advance the programme to the next control element.

If the valve is not activated (does not click):

  • ‒ Test exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18=> Page 24-33.

Activating intake manifold change-over valve -N156

 
→ Indicated on display:

Intake manifold change-over valve -N156

This valve will click (i.e. switch on and off) continuously for about 50 seconds unless the programme is deliberately advanced by pressing the⇒key.

If the valve is not activated (does not click):

  • ‒ Test intake manifold change-over function -N156.

Activating secondary air inlet valve

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Final control diagnosis    ⇒
Secondary air inlet valve -N112
  • The valve will continue to be activated (i.e. will click) for about 50 seconds, or until the ⇒ key is pressed to advance the programme to the next control element.

If the valve is not activated (does not click):

  • ‒ Test secondary air inlet valve -N112.

Activating relay for secondary air pump

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.
 
→ Indicated on display:

Secondary air pump relay -J299
  • The engine control unit activates the secondary air pump relay -J299 for about 10 seconds. At the same time, the secondary air pump relay activates the secondary air pump motor -V101. The secondary air pump motor runs for about 10 seconds (well audible) unless the final control diagnosis is deliberately terminated by pressing the ⇒ key.

If secondary air pump motor does not run:

  • ‒ Test secondary air pump relay -J299
    .
  • ‒ Press ⇒key.

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.

Note:

If the final control diagnosis is to be repeated, switch the ignition off for about 2 seconds and then back on again.
