Removing

Attention:
Wheels must be in straightahead position before removing steering wheel.
Heed safety precautions for working on airbags.=>General Body Repairs, Interior; Repair Group 69; Airbag safety instructions
Non-compliance with the above can result in subsequent airbag system failure.
  • ‒ Remove steering column .
  • ‒ Remove lock cylinder.

=> Electrical System; Repair Group 94; Servicing ignition/starter switch and lock cylinder; Removing and installing lock cylinder for steering/starting lock

  •     1 -    Cap
  • ‒ Make sure cap -1- has been fitted so as to prevent wiring abrasion.
  • ‒ Detach steering lock housing.

Note:

Steeringcolumn must be clamped in a vice as shown for chiseling out shear bolts.

Mounting bracket of steering column will be damaged if work is performed with steering column installed.

Securing bracket of steering column is not to be clamped in vice as this could damage plastic moulding.

Installing

  • ‒ Install steering lock housing.
  • ‒ Screw in new shear bolts.
  • ‒ Tighten shear bolts until head shears off.
    • Shear-off moment of new bolts ≥ 20 Nm
  • ‒ Install lock cylinder.

  • ‒ Install steering column => Page 48-159.
