General information
General information

With “immobilizer I” the keys were originally not marked. Since the introduction of newer versions the keys have been marked with a -W- and an -F-.
Function
Components of the electronic immobilizer:
1 - Up to Model Year 1997: Immobilizer control unit -J362-; as of Model Year 1998, immobilizer control unit integrated into dash panel insert
2 - Immobilizer warning lamp -K117- in dash panel insert
3 - Reader coil at ignition lock
4 - Matched ignition keys with electronics (transponder)
t  The immobilizer control unit -J362- can be replaced separately. The immobilizer control unit integrated into the dash panel insert can only be replaced together with the dash panel insert.
t  The immobilizer acts on the engine management system by way of a matched engine control unit.
t  The immobilizer reader coil reads out the transponder response code each time the ignition is switched on.
t  The immobilizer warning lamp -K117- lights briefly if use is being made of an authorised vehicle key.
t  If use is made of an unauthorised vehicle key or if there is a fault in the system, the immobilizer warning lamp -K117- flashes continuously with the ignition switched on.
  Note
Immobilizer self-diagnosis can now only be performed using the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
Immobilizer PIN
t  For security reasons, the immobilizer PIN is encoded. The encoded number (PIN = Personal Identification Number) is made up of 7 digits. It must be obtained by way of the appropriate regional sales centre/importer on the basis of the 14-digit immobilizer/engine control unit identification number → Chapter.
t  The PIN can only be used in combination with the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
  Note
t  Check the data of your vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- with regard to the sales centre/importer and workshop code, as well as date and time.
t  Immobilizer adaption cannot be implemented if the data are incorrect.
Notes on using/matching vehicle keys
t  The engine will only start if use is made of an authorised vehicle key, i.e. a vehicle key matched to the immobilizer.
t  The matching procedure → Chapter involves matching all vehicle keys, including spare and emergency keys, to the immobilizer.
t  If new or additional vehicle keys are required, all vehicle keys must again be matched to the immobilizer.
t  If for some reason matching cannot be performed for all vehicle keys, e.g. due to loss of keys on a journey, customers are to be informed that subsequent matching of all vehicle keys is required.
t  Re-matching of the remaining vehicle keys is particularly important if a key has been lost, as the lost vehicle key is then no longer authorised to start the vehicle.
