Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic tester
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

  WARNING
Observe safety regulations for pyrotechnic components → Chapter.
1 - Torx bolts -T30- (2x)
q   Tightening torque: 7 Nm
2 - Steering wheel
q   Removing and installing → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.48
3 - Plug for coil connector
4 - Connector for airbag unit
5 - Airbag unit
t  Removing:
–  Disconnect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Release steering column adjuster.
–  Pull steering wheel -2- out and up as far as possible.
–  Move steering wheel -2- to vertical position.
–  Slacken off one Torx bolt -T30--1-.
–  Move steering wheel back half a turn and slacken off second Torx bolt -T30--1-.
–  Unplug connector for airbag unit -4-.
–  Unplug connector for horn -6-.
–  Set down airbag unit -5- with impact cushion facing upwards.
t  Installing:
Install in reverse order of removal. Observe the following:
–  Make sure connector and retaining clip engage fully with a clicking sound.
–  Make sure wires do not make contact with gas generator.
–  Take care not to trap airbag wire. Route airbag wire to left in a loop.
–  Route horn wire outwards in a loop.
–  Tighten bolts -1- (2x) to a torque of 7 Nm.
–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
Make sure nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is being connected.
–  Connect battery earth strap → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
  Note
t  Observe measures to be taken after connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
t  If the airbag warning lamp -K75- indicates a fault following installation, you must interrogate, erase and then re-interrogate the event memory → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
6 - Connector for horn
7 - Multi-point socket head bolt
q   Tightening torque → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr.48
8 - Connector for heated steering wheel
9 - Return ring with slip ring
