Special tools, testers and other items required
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- (with 50 A current probe -VAS 5051/9-)
t  Adapter set -V.A.G 1594C-
  Note
All fuses OK → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Remove operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- → Chapter.

–  Unplug connectors -D- and -F- from operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
–  Connect test box adapter cable -V.A.G 1598/12- to unplugged connector -D-.
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598A- to adapter cable -V.A.G 1598/12-
Check on vehicle up to chassis number “399999” in Model Year 2005 (Saloon and Avant) and “012912” in Model Year 2005 (Cabrio) → Parts catalogue
–  Measure voltage between contact “5” at connector -F- and socket “13” (earth connection) of test box.
t  Specification: approx. battery voltage
–  Measure resistance between contact 6 at connector -F- and socket “13” (earth connection) of test box.
t  Specification: Resistance approx. 0.5.....1.0 Ω (ohms)
  Note
t  As resistances of less than 10 Ω cannot be measured with sufficient accuracy using workshop equipment, it is not possible to establish a short circuit in the wiring or in the heated rear window -Z1-.
t  If the resistance value is too high, check wiring to heated rear window -Z1- for open circuit and eliminate open circuit. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Plug connectors -D- and -F- to operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (all connectors are now plugged in at operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-).
–  Guide wire to connector -F- contact “6” through 50 A current probe -VAS 5051/9-.
–  On vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051A-, set “Multimeter measurement: 50 A current probe” mode.
  Note
All connectors must be plugged in at the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
–  Start engine.
–  Switch on heated rear window at the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (indicator lamp in button lights).
t  Specification: Display switches from approx. 0 A to less than 25 A
–  Wait approx. 12 minutes.
t  Specification: Display switches from less than 25 A to approx. 0 A (indicator lamp in button goes out)
  Note
t  Interference on the current probe may cause a slight current to be displayed with the heated rear window switched off.
t  At ambient temperatures below 0 °C, the heated rear window -Z1- remains switched on until the ignition is switched off (manual deactivation is possible at any time). If the temperature during a driving cycle rises above 0 °C, the heated rear window is deactivated on completion of the operating period stored in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (approx. 12 minutes).
t  At ambient temperatures greater than 0 °C, the heated rear window is switched off automatically by the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- on completion of the operating period stored in the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (approx. 12 minutes).
Check on vehicle as of chassis number “400000” in Model Year 2005 (Saloon and Avant) and “012913” in Model Year 2005 (Cabrio) → Parts catalogue
–  Measure voltage between socket “12” (terminal “30”) and socket “13” (earth connection) of test box.
t  Specification: approx. battery voltage
–  Measure resistance between contact “6” at connector -F- and socket “13” (earth connection) of test box.
t  Specification: Resistance approx. 10. ... 100 Ω (ohms)
  Note
t  As resistances of less than 10 Ω cannot be measured with sufficient accuracy using workshop equipment, it is not possible to establish a short circuit in the wiring or in the heated rear window -Z1-.
t  If the resistance value is too high, check wiring to heated rear window -Z1- for open circuit and eliminate open circuit. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Plug connectors -D- and -F- to operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (all connectors are now plugged in at operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-).
–  On vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051A-, set “Multimeter measurement, voltage measurement (20 V DC)” mode.
  Note
t  All connectors must be plugged in at the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
t  Measure voltage between contact “6” at connector -F- and socket “13” (earth connection) of test box.
t  Specification: Voltage less than 2 V
–  Start engine.
–  Switch on heated rear window at the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- (indicator lamp in button lights).
t  Specification: Voltage switches from approx. 0 V to approx. battery voltage (and heated rear window relay -J9- switches on heated rear window -Z1- → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations)
  Note
Actuation of heated rear window can be checked for example by placing hand on heater wire area of rear window (heater wires must become warm).
–  Wait approx. 12 minutes.
t  Specification: Display switches from approx. battery voltage to less than approx. 2 V (indicator lamp in button goes out)
  Note
t  At ambient temperatures below 0 °C, the heated rear window -Z1- remains switched on until the ignition is switched off (manual deactivation is possible at any time).
