Air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280-
(heed notes)
t  The air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- is switched on and off at 5-second intervals.
–  This causes the compressor to be switched on and off.
–  The air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- is actuated such that there is a current flow of approx. 0.65 ...0.8 A.
–  Eliminate compressor shutoff criterion → Chapter
–  Check air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- → Chapter.

  Note
t  At present, the air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- is only actuated when the engine is not running. If the engine is running, this control element is not displayed during final control diagnosis (depending on version of operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-) by the vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051A- and not actuated by the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-.
t  The regulating valve is installed in the compressor (the compressor can only be replaced at a specialist air conditioner workshop). → Air conditioner with refrigerant R134a
t  The current flow with the air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- activated can be measured for example using a current probe → Chapter.
t  If there is a further compressor shutoff criterion in addition to compressor shutoff criterion “5 = Engine speed less than 300 rpm”, the air conditioning system compressor regulating valve -N280- is not actuated.

Radiator fan control unit -J293-, speed “1” + “2”
(heed notes)
t  The operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- transmits the request for actuation of the radiator fan -V7- (via the data bus system) to the relevant engine control unit. Actuation changes constantly within approx. 10 to 30 seconds between 0% and 30 ... 100% of maximum speed (depending on engine control unit).
–  By way of the radiator fan control unit -J293- and with the engine running, the relevant engine control unit switches the fan from 0% to 30 ... 100% of the radiator fan -V7- speed (depending on engine control unit).
–  The radiator fan -V7- speed changes depending on actuation (from “Off” to the “maximum speed” requested by the engine control unit).
–  Interrogate fault memory of operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-. Faults should not be displayed → Chapter.
–  Interrogate fault memory of relevant engine control unit and check actuation of radiator fan -V7- by engine control unit via radiator fan control unit -J293- → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, → Injection and ignition system; Rep. Gr.01 or → Diesel glow plug and injection system; Rep. Gr.01
–  Check power supply and earth connection to radiator fan control unit -J293- and to radiator fan -V7-. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations

  Note
t  Start the engine if actuation of the radiator fan -V7- is to be checked. The relevant engine control unit only switches on the radiator fan(s) -V7- when the engine is running.
t  Depending on the version of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the radiator fan is either switched on immediately in air conditioning mode when the compressor is activated or the radiator fan is only actuated on exceeding a pressure of approx. 9 bar in the refrigerant circuit.
t  The request for activation of the radiator fan -V7- is transmitted via the convenience data bus system by the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- to the control unit in dash panel insert -J285-. The control unit in dash panel insert -J285- (gateway) then transmits the request to the drive data bus system to which the relevant engine control unit is connected. By means of a square-wave signal, the engine control unit subsequently actuates the radiator fan control unit -J293- and the radiator fan control unit -J293- switches on the radiator fan(s) -V7-.
t  Depending on the version of the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the radiator fan -V7- is either actuated in speeds “1” and “2” in one test step or switching may be necessary for actuation of speed “2”.
