Status of signal received by auxiliary heating radio controlled receiver -R64-, actuation of auxiliary heater by way of an additional input, counter for auxiliary heater deactivation on account of excessive coolant temperature and counter for faults during auxiliary heater operation

Display zoneDisplay
1Current status of signal from auxiliary heating radio controlled receiver -R64-
t  Display = Activated
–  Auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation can be activated via remote control
t  Display = On
–  Signal for activation of auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation currently being received
t  Display = Off
–  No signal for deactivation of auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation currently being received
t  Display = Transport
–  The auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation cannot be activated at present via remote control (the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is “dormant”).
–  The control unit in dash panel insert -J285- transmits the message “Power saving” via the convenience data bus system.
–  Perform “Adaption” function in control unit in dash panel insert -J285- and deactivate the “Power saving” function. → Electrical system; Rep. Gr. 01 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Display = Disabled
–  Auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation cannot be switched on at present via remote control
–  A fault not permitting this is or was stored in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-.

  Note
t  In auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation mode, the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- decides on the basis of the specified temperatures set and the actual temperatures measured whether the auxiliary heater is to be started up or the air conditioner is to be activated in auxiliary ventilation mode. On vehicles with heater (no air conditioner), the auxiliary heater is always started up at present (no decision has to be taken by the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-).
t  After pressing the remote control buttons, the display does not switch immediately from “Activated” to “On” or “Off” but rather there is a brief delay after signal reception.
t  If a fault not permitting activation of auxiliary heating/auxiliary ventilation is or was stored in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-, “Disabled” is displayed. Depending on the fault, it may be necessary to briefly start the engine after erasing the fault memory (“Terminal 15” on is transmitted via the convenience data bus system) in order to effect release (for the auxiliary heating radio controlled receiver -R64- as well). It is also not possible to adapt a new remote control as long as “Disabled” is being displayed.
t  The no-load current input of an active remote control receiver (not set to power saving mode) is in the less than 3 mA range (the current input increases as soon as a transmission signal is received).

2Actuation of auxiliary heater by way of an additional input
t  Display = Off
–  No signal being applied
t  Display = On
–  A voltage of greater than 6 V is being applied to contact “12” in the vehicle connector to the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-.

  Note
t  Contact “12” in the vehicle connector to the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is not used in the case of auxiliary heaters fitted as an optional extra. The auxiliary heater is actuated by way of the convenience data bus system.
t  Contact “12” in the vehicle connector to the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- is provided for service installed auxiliary heaters which are not actuated via the convenience data bus system.
t  If “Disabled” is displayed in zone “1”, the auxiliary heater cannot be activated at present by applying a voltage to contact “12” (a fault is or was stored in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-). Depending on the version of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- it may then be necessary for the message “Terminal 15 on” to be received by way of the convenience data bus system. In this case, the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- (of the service installed auxiliary heater) is to be connected to the convenience data bus system. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations

Display zoneDisplay
3Number of times auxiliary heater deactivated on account of excessive coolant temperature
t  Display = 0
–  The auxiliary heater has not been deactivated on account of excessive coolant temperature since the fault memory was last erased.
t  Display = 1 .... X
–  The auxiliary heater has been deactivated X times on account of excessive coolant temperature (greater than approx. 120 °C) since the fault memory was last erased.
–  Check heater overheating fuse -S24- → Chapter

  Note
t  As the auxiliary heater is switched to the control interval at approx. 90 °C, deactivation on account of excessive coolant temperature can only occur in the event of a fault in the coolant circuit, in the auxiliary heater control unit -J364- or at the temperature sensor -G18-.
t  If necessary, check the heater overheating fuse -S24- of the auxiliary heater and the corresponding wiring for open circuit or loose contact.

Display zoneDisplay
4Number of times auxiliary heater deactivated on account of no flame formation
t  Display = 0
–  Since the last interlock on account of no flame formation (and erasing of the fault memory), a flame has always formed in the auxiliary heater on starting (at first attempt or on start repetition).
–  The auxiliary heater is interlocked after a maximum of approx. 70 ml (cm3) of fuel has been conveyed into the auxiliary heater without a flame forming.
t  Display = 1 .... XX
–  The auxiliary heater has been deactivated X times on account of no flame formation (following start repetition) since the last interlock on account of no flame formation (and erasing of the fault memory).
–  A higher number may also be displayed here if there have only been sporadic faults during operation and the auxiliary heater functions properly in between (the auxiliary heater is not interlocked)

  Note
t  If a proper flame does not form in the auxiliary heater after several attempted starts (more than approx. 70 ml (cm3) of fuel conveyed into the auxiliary heater), the auxiliary heater is interlocked (possibly too much fuel in auxiliary heater). The auxiliary heater cannot be reactivated until the fault memory has been read out and erased.
t  Depending on the version of the auxiliary heater control unit -J364-, the display in this zone may be reset to “0” at the same time as the entry is made in the fault memory following auxiliary heater interlock on account of no flame formation or the display may continue to show the number of faults during operation until the fault memory is erased and there is operation with flame formation.
t  With certain auxiliary heater control units -J364-, the display of the number of faults during operation is not reset to “0” after erasing the fault memory or is only reset if the auxiliary heater was interlocked at the same time.
