Removing and installing speedometer sender G22 > < Renewing flange shaft oil seal (left-side)

l  Gearbox installed
   
–  If fitted, loosen fasteners -2- and -3- and remove rear noise insulation -B-.

Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine:
–  Unbolt heat shield -arrow- for drive shaft (right side) from gearbox.
  Note
  A34-0521
The flexible joint (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.
–  Separate the exhaust system at the clamp -arrow- and slide the clamp to rear.

–  Unbolt front exhaust pipe from catalytic converter -arrows-.

–  Remove bolt -1- and detach front exhaust pipe.
Continued for all vehicles:
–  Remove drive shaft (right-side) from flange shaft and tie up as far as possible.
  Note
Make sure you do not damage surface coating on drive shaft.
–  Place container under gearbox.
–  Remove flange shaft securing bolt; to do so, screw two bolts into flange and counterhold flange shaft with tyre iron or other suitable lever.
–  Pull out flange shaft.
  A26-10118
–  Pry out oil seal using oil seal extractor lever -VW 681-.
  V34-2717
–  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Lightly lubricate outer circumference of oil seal.
–  Drive in flange shaft oil seal.
l  Insertion depth: 5.5 mm below surface of housing.
l  Insertion depth for repairs is 6.5 mm when a used flange shaft is employed.
  Note
Take care not to tilt oil seal when driving in.
–  Install flange shaft.
–  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine:
–  Install front exhaust pipe and perform stress-free alignment → Rep. Gr.26.
–  Install heat shield for drive shaft.
Continued for all vehicles:
–  Fill manual gearbox with gear oil and check oil level → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation.
