Renewing O-ring on cover for final drive Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782-

Procedure –  Loosen bolt -arrow- securing drive shaft to wheel hub (right-side) with vehicle standing on its wheels. –  Remove front right wheel.

–  Remove heat shield for drive shaft (right-side) -arrows-.   Note The third bolt is not shown in the illustration. –  Remove front exhaust pipe (right-side) → Rep. Gr.26. –  Unbolt drive shaft (right-side) -1- from flange shaft on gearbox → Rep. Gr.40. –  Remove gearbox support (right-side) → Chapter.

–  Remove bolt for flange shaft -arrow- (counterhold flange shaft with drift). –  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox. –  Pull out flange shaft (right-side).

–  Unscrew bolts of cover for final drive in the reverse sequence to the tightening sequence shown and remove cover.

–  Renew O-ring -arrow-.

–  Install cover for final drive. –  Tighten bolts securing cover for final drive in two stages in the sequence shown: 1.  Tighten bolts -1 … 3- hand-tight. 2.  Tighten bolts -1 ... 12- to 23 Nm in the sequence indicated. –  Install flange shaft (right-side). The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Install gearbox support → Chapter. –  Bolt drive shaft to flange shaft (right-side) → Rep. Gr.40. –  Install front exhaust pipe (right-side) → Rep. Gr.26. –  Install front wheel → Rep. Gr.44. –  Fill up gear oil in front final drive → Chapter. Tightening torques
