Removing and installing gearbox support and gearbox mounting (left and right) Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-

Removing –  Remove front exhaust pipe on relevant side of gearbox → Rep. Gr.26. –  Detach universal support -V.A.G 1359/2- from engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-. –  Place telescopic arm of engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- centrally below cast lug on gearbox housing -arrow- and support gearbox from below.

–  Remove securing bolts (left and right) -3- for gearbox mounting -B- at subframe -C-.   Note You must always detach both gearbox mountings from subframe.

–  Remove bolts -1- and -2- and lower subframe at rear.

–  Lower gearbox slightly with engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to make bolts -1- and -2- more accessible. –  Remove bolts -2-. –  Remove heat shield -B-.

Removing gearbox mounting -B- –  Remove bolt -1-. –  Detach gearbox mounting -B- with spacer shim -C-.   Note Spacer shim -C- is only installed on some versions.

Removing gearbox support –  Remove bolts -1-. –  Remove gearbox support -A- with gearbox mounting. Installing Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following: –  Install gearbox supports. –  Install the subframe, observing tightening sequence → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.   Note Do not tighten gearbox mountings to subframe to specified torque until re-installation of subframe has been completed.

–  To avoid tension you may have to re-align gearbox mounting -B- and spacer shim -C- with gearbox support.   Note Spacer shim -C- is only installed on some versions. –  Tighten all bolts to specified torque. –  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Rep. Gr.26.

Tightening torques for gearbox support and heat shield (left and right) 1 -  Bolt (3x) for securing gearbox support to gearbox, 23 Nm 2 -  Bolt (3x) for securing heat shield to gearbox support, 10 Nm
