Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A-
t  Block of wood

Removing
–  Open quick release fasteners -2- and -3- and take off rear noise insulation.
  Note
  A10-1320
The flexible pipe connection (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.
–  Loosen clamps -arrows- on both exhaust pipes to disconnect exhaust system.

–  Apply lifting column of engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to gearbox from below (place a block of wood -1- between lifting column and gearbox).
–  Use engine and gearbox jack -V.A.G 1383 A- to lift gearbox up slightly.

–  First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- and push tunnel cross member slightly towards the rear.

–  Unscrew bolts -2- and detach gearbox mounting -1- from gearbox.
Installing
Perform installation in reverse sequence of removal.
Tightening torques
  A37-10397
Gearbox mounting -1- to gearbox
t  Bolts M8 -item 2-, tightening torque: 23 Nm
  A37-10397
Gearbox mounting to tunnel cross member
t  Tightening torque → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
  A37-0448
Tunnel cross member to body
t  Tightening torques → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40
–  Align exhaust system so it is free of stress → Engine, mechanics; Rep. Gr.26.
