Checking selector mechanism (vehicles up to VIN 8E_6A156499)
Checking selector mechanism (vehicles up to VIN 8E_6A156499)
Overview:
t  1. Checking operation of selector mechanism → Anchor
t  2. Checking ignition key removal lock → Anchor
t  3. Checking interlock button on selector lever handle → Anchor
–  If the selector mechanism does not function as described, perform “Guided Fault Finding” using a vehicle diagnostic tester, e.g. vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051B-.
1. Checking operation of selector mechanism
l  It should not be possible to operate the starter while the selector lever is in position “S”, “D”, “R” or in the “tiptronic gate”.
l  When travelling at speeds above 5 km/h and shifting into selector lever position “N”, the solenoid for the selector lever lock must not engage and block the selector lever. The selector lever can be shifted into a driving gear.
l  When travelling at speeds below 2 km/h (almost stationary) and shifting into selector lever position “N”, the solenoid for the selector lever lock should only engage after about 1 second. Selector lever cannot be shifted out of “N” position until brake pedal is depressed.
Selector lever in “P” position and ignition switched on:
–  Do not depress brake pedal.
l  The selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of “P” position, even when the interlock button on the handle is pressed. Selector lever lock solenoid -N110- blocks selector lever.
–  Press and hold brake pedal.
l  Selector lever lock solenoid -N110- releases selector lever. When interlock button in selector lever handle is pressed, it should be possible to shift into a driving gear without “catching”.
l  Shift selector lever slowly from “P” position through “R, N, D and S” and check whether the selector lever position display -Y6- in the instrument cluster shows the correct selector lever position in each case.
Selector lever in position “N” and ignition switched on:
–  Do not depress brake pedal.
l  On vehicles up to approx. 08.01: selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of “N” position without pressing the interlock button on the selector lever handle. Selector lever lock solenoid -N110- blocks selector lever.
l  On vehicles from approx. 08.01: the selector lever is not locked immediately if it is shifted without delay through position “N” (e.g. from “R” to “D”). This allows the driver to free the vehicle in snow etc. by “rocking” it backwards and forwards. If the selector lever is left in position “N” for more than approx. 1 second without pressing the brake pedal, the selector lever lock engages.
–  Depress brake pedal.
l  Selector lever lock solenoid -N110- releases selector lever. When interlock button in selector lever handle is pressed, it should be possible to shift into a driving gear without “catching”.
Selector lever in position “D”, ignition switched on:
–  Shift selector lever into “tiptronic gate”.
l  The illuminated “D” symbol in the selector mechanism cover should go out and the “+” and “–” symbols should light up.
l  When the selector lever is moved into the “tiptronic gate” the selector lever position display -Y6- in the instrument cluster should change from “PRND” to “654321” or from “PRNDS” to “7654321” (vehicles from VIN 8E_5400001 onwards).
If results do not match specifications:
–  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter.
–  Check ignition key removal lock.
2. Checking ignition key removal lock
–  Turn ignition key to “ignition on” position.
–  Press and hold brake pedal.
l  When interlock button in selector lever handle is pressed, it should be possible to move selector lever out of position “P” without “catching”.
–  Switch off ignition.
l  It should not be possible to remove the ignition key when the selector lever is in any position other than “P”.
–  Shift selector lever to position “P”.
l  Ignition key should turn easily to “off” position for removal.
–  Remove ignition key.
l  It should only be possible to remove ignition key in selector lever position “P”.
l  Selector lever can then not be shifted out of “P” position with interlock button pressed and brake pedal depressed.
3. Checking interlock button on selector lever handle
Check that interlock button moves freely:
l  Interlock button should move easily when pressed without force.
l  Interlock button should spring back fully on its own when released.
If results do not match specifications:
–  Make sure that selector lever handle is correctly installed.
–  Check whether selector rod or selector lever is bent.
Function test:
l  Ignition switched on
Press the interlock button on the selector lever handle to move the handle into the positions listed below; it should not be possible to move the selector lever into these positions unless the interlock button is pressed.
t  “P” to “R” (also depress brake pedal)
t  “D” to “S”
t  “N” to “R” (brake pedal also has to be depressed after a short delay when vehicle is stationary)
t  “R” to “P”
If results do not match specifications:
–  Make sure that selector lever handle is correctly installed.
–  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter.
