Removing and installing front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter

Removing –  Release quick fasteners -arrows- and remove engine cover panel.

–  If fitted, detach cover -1- on right of engine compartment.

–  Disengage solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter system -N80- at air duct. –  Remove bolts -arrows-. –  Remove air duct -2-.

–  Unplug electrical connector -3- at solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter system -N80- and the electrical connector -5- at air mass meter -G70-. –  Detach hoses -1-, -4-, -6- and -7-. –  Remove fastener -2- and detach air cleaner housing.

–  Unbolt coolant expansion tank -arrow-. –  Unplug electrical wire for coolant shortage indicator switch -F66- at bottom of expansion tank and move expansion tank to one side with coolant hoses -1- and -2- attached.

–  Detach electrical connectors -2- and -5- from retainer at left of bulkhead. –  Unplug electrical connectors -2- and -5- and move wiring clear downwards.

–  Unscrew nuts securing turbocharger to catalytic converter -arrows-.

–  Vehicles with auxiliary heater: remove bolts -arrows- securing exhaust pipe for auxiliary/additional heater to noise insulation.

–  Release quick-release fasteners -1- and -2- and take off front noise insulation. –  If fitted, open quick-release fasteners -3- and remove rear noise insulation.

–  Unbolt heat shield -1- for drive shaft (right-side).

–  Unscrew nut -arrow- at bracket for front exhaust pipe.   Note

To avoid any damage, the flexible joint in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10°. –  Loosen bolt connections of front clamp -arrows-. –  Push the clamp back in order to separate the exhaust system. –  Detach front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter. Installing Installation is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:   Note Renew gaskets and self-locking nuts. –  Align exhaust system free of stress → Chapter „Stress-free alignment of exhaust system - vehicles with front-wheel drive“ and → Chapter „Stress-free alignment of exhaust system - vehicles with four-wheel drive“. Tightening torques

1)  Renew nuts.
