Checking mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve
Checking mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve
  Note
t  The exhaust gas recirculation system is activated by the diesel direct injection system control unit -J248- via the exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18- and the mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve.
t  The tapered plunger in the mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve varies the opening cross section according to valve travel.
t  Pulsed actuation makes it possible to obtain any required valve position.
t  The exhaust gas recirculation is switched off after approx. 10 minutes at idling speed.
t  Restart engine or briefly increase engine speed above 1500 rpm when longer checks are necessary. Then repeat measurement.
t  Secure all hose connections with the correct type of hose clips (same as original equipment) → Electronic parts catalogue.
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213-
  W00-10259
Test sequence
–  Pull dipstick -1- out of guide tube.
–  Unclip cover caps.
–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- and detach engine cover panel.
–  Remove insulation beneath cover.
–  Re-insert dipstick in guide tube.
  A10-1034
–  Detach vacuum hose at mechanical exhaust gas recirculation valve.
–  Connect hand vacuum pump -VAS 6213- or -V.A.G 1390- to valve.
–  Use hand vacuum pump to generate vacuum.
–  Detach hose of hand vacuum pump at exhaust gas recirculation valve.
l  The closing of the valve should be clearly audible. The diaphragm rod should move towards the intake manifold.
  Note
  A26-0386
